bios flashing help please

Thread Starter
okay i have the msi p6n sli -fi board. it woudln't run with 4 gb of ram so msi claims there is a bios update that will make it work with 4 gb.

so there is a usb flash tool for msi, here:
http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=107946.0

i just don't know how to flash a bios.
i've only done it using msi live update feature, so i never had to do it from a system restart point, but this one cannot be done by live update, as it is a beta version, and not yet release by msi, but the tech support guy sent it to me.

anyways. i dont' know how to use the msi usb flash thingy,

so if anyone has ever tried it and has success, or anyone knowledgeable can please give me some instructions, that would be great.

if no one knows, any instructions on flashing it with floppy, would probably be fine, because im sure the steps won't be too different for the usb way.

i have only done it with a dos boot disk. make yourself a bootable dos floppy disk. add the bios files you need to the disk and a flashing tool of your choice. write down the names ofboth files make sure that they are spelled correctly. boot from disk and at the dos prompt flash that bad boy.

I cant view your link but what is most likely the case is that the bios comes with a flash utility like awdflash or something. A couple of things first is there a option in your bios that you can choose to update bios?

First unzip the bios package and put all of that stuff on the usb drive. Now you have to either do one of two things. You have to set the boot priority to boot tot he usb drive first which will cause the utility to run and just follow the instructions for flashing the bios.

If you have a option in your current bios to update bios say something like awdflash utility pic that then it will search for your bios from the USB and follow the instructions.

Now if your bios didnt come in a zip folder and doesnt have anything but the bin file or whatever then you will need to download the flash utility for that bios and use that with the usb to upgrade your bios. There should be instrucitons that are very detailed on the MSI site. You can look there and it should give you all the details on how to flash. Some of the utilities need you to type instructions for flashing while your going thru the process and are not fully automated.
One thing I am not sure about is if you need to boot from the usb sometimes you will need to format it first as a boot drive which can be done with the usb but I am no pro at it.
Infact if you have problems with the usb you could still do it with the floppy I believe.

Here is a link to boot with the floppy. Here should be similer/same as a usb drive.
Also if you need to format a usb drive to be a boot disk I think its HP that has a utility for that. You can google it its a program that will do the same thing to a usb that windows does with the floppy.
