Down/Underclocking with Nvidia Control Panel

Thread Starter
I have a 8500GT and sure it's a nice card for what I use it for but I'm not using it every second it's on to the fullest need. Say I want to leave it on while I'm away or I'm not doing anything graphics intensive, that's a lot of electricity to noticeable degrees on the bill that's being used beyond necessity.

So I have the Nvidia Control Panel with the capability to overclock and such or set certain conditions of what actions are performed if other actions occur. (i.e. If I run Halo then I can load a power profile or if I run a DVD kick it up a notch) I loaded the default profile and read it in notepad, sysdflt.nsu, to see a lot of parameters set in it that look like they could be hand tweaked to be lesser.

My question is has anyone tried to or is it possible for me to set the thing nearly at a crawl or turn it off or fine tweak it to be efficient when I don't need the card? Basically instead of overclocking it I want to underclock or downclock it.

Its unnecessary. Doing so probably wouldn't affect your power bill by a dollar or so.

As far as i know... The card doesn't use as much electricity on idle as it does under load. (not sure)
the 8500 is also not a power hungry card either.

The best thing is just turn off your computer when you are not using it.

That card barely eats up any power and by underclocking, you will save yourself about a dollar a month tops, more like a year.

Your GFX already has 3 different power modes written into the Bios, 2D power, 3D Low power and 3D performance mode.

I have heard that underclocking on 2D settings may keep your gpu a tad cooler, but even then it would not truly affect it a great deal.
