well not really.... its impossible to make a 100% efficient power supply... so therefore you will never get the full watts you pay for - whatever it is, energy is always wasted by it being converted into one form or another. The problem is, the electrons moving have kinetic energy - and kinetic energy gets turned into the heat and slight noise energy by parts of the power supply which resist the flow - happens when anything goes through matter, which gives the worse efficiency

that said, most good power supplies are around 80% efficient, so you aren't losing too much.

100% of course not, but really really close, is doable. High temp superconductors and carbon nanotubes anyone?

To be honest you don't even need those ultra high tech components to reach near 100% efficiency.

yes of course... i just re read the article, and it explains about making 93% efficient power supplies... higher is possible but as you get better efficiency it requires more expensive parts to go into the power supply which means the final product costs more money for the consumer

the better thing is, the more efficient everything gets, the less power wasted which means we can cut emissions made by power stations which would mean less greenhouse gases

I've understood PSU effeciency for quite a long time, hence the reason I get spendy with my PSU's. I work at an industrial electronics manufacturer and we always use top notch supplies in our equipment. Poor power supplies cause us many problems in equipment we purchase and retrofit from other manufacturers.

I know my Corsair's claim of 80% efficient is quite true because it runs cool to the touch even under load. It is a good feeling knowing there is clean solid DC power going to my computer components, and that the PSU isn't being stressed to perform its duty... it also is a good feeling knowing that I am not hemorraging excess power out of my wall for no reason because of a junk PSU.

Well said, iandh. An efficient power supply will also "pay for itself" over its usable life. I look at it this way. You can pay for it now, or later, but eventually a power supply will cost you just the same. With a high quality unit you reap the benefit of clean, stable power with efficiency as a "by-product".

We overclockers can help if chip manufacturers would release only the good steppings, so we don't have to use as much voltage to get what we want.

This isn't really "news for overclockers", not saying that it shouldn't be in this section, but most of us prefers performance over these things.

well i guess if you were really worried you could use the air getting dumped out the back of your PSU to power a little turbine to charge a battery and use the warmth to raise the temperature of a cup of water for your bath by 0.1C

but you aren't all that lame and you don't all really care as long as your megahurtzes are working!
