New Comp Build... Suggestions? - Page 3

Gotcha, nice... yeah no I meant lower wattage ... electricity terms ftw

What i was thinking of was maybe getting a 400w psu... and then using my old PSU (i think its a 350... could be wrong...) and just rigging the old one up to power the hard drive, DVD drive etc... but if the system is only gonna draw 300 W approx., then I'll just get that OP650 and not worry about it.

Now that that's settled, someone suggested the Thermaltake Armor w/ 25cm fan on the side... instead of the Shark... anyone have experience with either? or have a similar case they think would be better?

People tend to be reluctant to spend money on a quality PSU. A PSU with high ripple will absolutely destroy your computer. The OP650 is a great PSU (I may purchase one tonight).

As for the case, that has a lot to with your personal preference. I like my Stacker (large, heavy, and easily modified). Gigabyte / Antec / Coolermaster / Silvertone / Thermaltake all make pretty good cases. I nromally use Newegg to find a case that I like but I often purchase them from ZipZoomfly.com as they have free shipping. That can save a lot of money!

Thanks, yeah i've heard of zipzoomfly from the hardware price comparisons on oc.net found that they had the cheapest prices on a lot of items....

Any thoughts on waiting till July and getting a quad core instead of the core 2 duo 6420?

It is really up to you. If you can stand your computer for another month go for it! You will get a lot more bang for your buck!

"For an intel build"? What would an AMD build look like with $2000 dumped into it? Oh I know what it will look like. It will look like "not" as good looking as an Intel build.

If AMD had better chips right now, do you think people would go in and say, "Another AMD build... For an AMD build, it looks good."? No, because anyone would say, "What are you trying to say? That an Intel build could be better?"

Instead of going for the 8800gts 640m go for the 8800gtx, its ridiculously fast right now and it should be able to last you a good while, and even if it does get overpowered with the upcoming dx10 games, you can always go SLI

I would wait for DX10 games to come out so you can really see how good the handle it, the 2900XT maybe be better you never know.

Waiting to go Quad Core may be an idea. Keep in mind, AMD will be releasing quad core chips later this year, who knows what will happen then. For right now, the E6420 is a great chip for the money. If you wait til July, the Q6600 will be a great chip for the money. By November, when DX10 games start to come out and such, it may be a whole different ball game. That's what I'm banking on with this AM2 build, lol.

You don't really make much sense.

How is AMD going to effect the Q6600?

Barcelona (and the desktop variant) will not be out until late this year into early next year.

Waiting for a Q6600 isn't a bad deal.
