I've been reading about lapping. Can this be done with little difficulty? I am afraid of messing things up, since I don't really have enough to buy another processor and heatsink right now. I noticed that there were different sizes that could be ordered, and I would not know where to start. Also is there a recommended size fan that might fit my heatsink?

There are plenty of threads here on OCN regarding lapping.

It's really not all that "difficult." It's more time-consuming than anything else. You've got to have the willingness to spend the time and have the elbow grease to do a lapping job.

It seems intimidating to do, at first, and there's a decision you have to make before you do lap: Are you willing to forfeit your warranty? Lapping will void it, for sure, so this is the big question before you do decide to do it.

Lapping can gain you up to around 10 degrees Celsius if you do a good job at it. For some, every degree of lower load temperature is precious, so any observed improvement is a welcome one.

Hope this helps! And good luck.
