Oblivion: what mods do you use? (+ some help for me)

post #1 of 25
Thread Starter
So I recently got an 8800GTS 640mb and decided to replay Oblivion as I haven't played it since it came out and I had my trusty 7900gt. I played with mods back then but mostly small ones just for fun. I remember how bored I got last time I played, in fact I don't think I ever finished the main quest. I have been relearning things and have a few questions.

I know there is an Oblivion thread in the top of the forum, but I figured this may get more traffic and it is more of a broad question than a specific one that would be posted to that thread. If the mods deem it necessary then they will merge this thread with that one I suppose.

I tried OOO and MMM, and couldn't get them to work together at the same time. I made sure I had the right esp's checked and all but it crashed upon loading. I switched to Francesco's mod, and it worked well with MMM. After a few hours I found that the amount of creatures and their distribuition with MMM was excessive to the point of stupidity. For instance, one time I walked out of imperial city to find Two boars, a mountain lion, a pack of wolves, and a bunch of rats all hanging out together in a group in a 50ft area in total peace with each other. As soon as I approached, the whole lot came chasing after me. When traveling on roads, there would be so many bandits I could barely travel anywhere. It was supposed to make the world more populated, IMO it just made it overcrowded. I enabled the reduced spawn option, but he might as well have called it the no spawn otion because creatures were so rare I would have to walk around for 5 min just to find a rat.

After deciding I didn't like MMM I tried OOO and Fran's by themselves, and found I liked OOO much better. I used the lite version and disabled slow leveling, because the first time I played with slow leveling enabled by the time I got to level two I already had full mithril armor and elvish weapons, several enchanted items, and about 20,000 gold, which I thought was rather excessive for a level one player to have in his possesion. One thing I really did like about OOO was the variable difficulty of fights, and the randomness of items that I could find in a dungeon, sometimes awesome, sometimes not so good. With Fran's, I just found that every fight was too hard and didn't really notice any major gameplay or aesthetics improvements like in OOO.

I have heard some people say that using OOO, MMM, and Fran's at the same time strikes a good balance. So my questions are:

What order do I load these in, and which of the leveling/creature enhancements should I use?

OOO
MMM
Francesco's
Natural Environments
Qarl's Texture pack
BTmod
DarkUI

Should I use a mod manager?

What should/shouldn't I enable in the mods?

Thanks all, I have trashed about 5-6 characters and about 30 hours of time trying to find something I'm happy with, and I'm not quite there yet but am a lot closer than I was before.

I use mods that don't help me but make things nice.
Natural Environments, love this one.
Elven Cartographers, Nice map makes the whole game like 200% better.
BT Mod, the mod to have seriously it's that good.
Qarl's TexPack, Oh yeah makes my friend's xbox360 version look like Arena

*not trying to hijack thread but quick question. I've heard people using that texture pack mod can have slow frame rates even with a 8800GTX. Is this true? Would I have problems?

I have about 30 mods, including just about all of the important texture packs. It works fine.

Just go to tessource.net and look through the the Top 150 Oblivion mods. They have alot of real good mods there.

I especially like the Deadly Combat mod. It makes combat, well, more realistic and more deadly. One missed block could cost you half of your life (if you run it with 2.5x damage on). Makes the game much more interesting. And it adds rather hilarious moves like cutting people in half, cut their head off etc.

Wouldnt that mod basically eliminate the whole "role play" though? I mean strength and health wouldnt matter if one wrong move cost you your life..

I mean I think that odea sounds great but for a game like Oblivion where you try to level up how does that work?

And by the way, whats the best MOD for making thingfs random and not that crappy ass level based system. I HATED that about the 360 version, as soon as I found out about that I traded the game in.

Oscuro's overhaul is meant to fix exactly that. The difference was night and day when I first played after installing it. If you install any mod at all OOO is the one you want first to fix the problem you are describing. Items and enemies now seem truly random instead of a scripted drudgery like with vanilla oblivion.

BTW all, I think I have solved my problem with OOO and MMM, I was running Oscuro's 1.31 and "MMM for OOO.esp" needs Oscuro's 1.32 RC2 beta to function properly. I downloaded and installed it and now the two seem to be working in perfect harmony. My major mods installed now are:

Oscuro's Oblivion overhaul 1.32 RC2
Martigen's monster mod 3.0
Qarl's Texture pack
Natural Environments
BTMod
DarkUI

I didn't find that Francesco's did anything for me special so I left it out. The mods I listed above are the "core mods" IMO absolutely necessary to make the game into what I think truly does it justice.

I have a few other minor mods installed but they are just for fun mostly.

Are all the mods you speak of listed with their correct version? In other words if I search for them can I search for exactly what you put iandh?

Thanks to by the way!

I have about 25 mods including but not limited to:
* Qarl's
* OOO
* Beautiful Faces
* Better Bodies
* Natural Environments
* Darker Nights
* Every other highly ranked texture mod

I have so many texture mods, I only run 15-25 FPS outdoors at 1920x1200 max everything with HDR on and no AA.
