Motherboard Size, Will it fit???

post #1 of 12

Hey guys, i'm looking to put a new motherboard into my Pre-fab HP system and i'm wondering if anyone out there has done this already.

HP decided to put a micro-ATX in this system... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00714578 is the specifications table link, but what i'm really concerned with is how the ports will line up, such as front access firewire/usb/microphone/card slots. Do they come with new back plates??

I'm kinda hesitant to make this upgrade as i've never done one before but am determined to be able to overclock my 4200+ and to have 2 pci-e slots for some crossfire action. My current MoBo is listed in my system and also goes by Nodusm. The MoBo to be purchased was the Foxconn C51XEM2AA-8EKRS2H until i found out that my current mobo is MICRO-ATX.... will ATX fit or is this not even a question worth asking......otherwise, what are you favorite micro-atx amd mobos??

That's standard micro-atx, so any micro-atx board will work.

No, the ATX motherboard will not fit in a m-ATX chassis, also there aren't really any good overclocking m-ATX motherboards, I would just buy a cheap ATX case.

Most Biostar boards are good but they only have 1 PCI-E slot

Wow, quick answers on this forum.
I did some internet sleuthing and it looks like eVga has the only sli overclocking mATX mobo ( 131-K8-NF44 ),
Possible Problems:
1: it says that when in Sli mode it's only pci-e 8x effective, will that in any way limit something as midrange as 2x x1950 pro's
2: it only has ONE pci slot (not a huge deal but limits options).
3: i can't find it in a store anywhere, and when i do it is the 939 version (all the sites mention there is an AM2 updated one released...but i can't find it, nor do i know if it has ddr2 support.

I didn't realize that cases were that cheap, like 35 bucks,(i'd probably go 60 so my components don't collapse/melt the cases, lol) this new alternative of case confuses me as to what to do now but i'm leaning towards the matx mobo... i'll think about it for a bit. but thanks guys, kind of newb here.

Any opinions?

SLI = Nvidia only
Crossfire = Ati only

There are no crossfire micro-atx boards and there is only one SLI one but it's older and wouldn't be worth it. Either get a new case or forget dual graphics cards is basically what it comes down to. If you had the money for duals anyway you should be able to afford a new case too.

There's one called an Abit Fatal1ty. Apparently that's a good overclocking mATX board. Nevermind, I found the sli mATX board, problem is it's socket 939.

Man, i thought that Mobos just said sli because the integrated graphics on it are by nvidia (self-advertising)....assuming that i could put 2 cards of any brand in there hooked together.....it's actually brand specific? i can't use a Sli Mobo with ati cards? (the "bridge" isin't through the motherboard anyways and it's similar to Sli).....i suppose i can see why with ati only getting good results with dual gpu's recently

You can use ATI cards on a SLI certified motherboard, but only one video card. Same thing the other way around. If you are only getting one card, it doesn't matter if it's SLI, Crossfire, or neither.

Here's how it works:

SLI:

Single Nvidia
Dual Nvidia
Single ATI

Crossfire:

Single ATI
Dual ATI
Single Nvidia
