Finally Finished Quake 4 - Supa Review by Me!!111 - Page 3

As I said before, I felt that Quake 4 was a nice break from srategic fps games. It was nice to be able to run and gun, and charge the enemy and blow their head off, other than taking cover like in cs. Yes the 2d backdrops were pretty horrible, but the indoor scenes make up for it. It was very short, so I don't understand how it really got repetative. I guess you could see it as: You walk into a room, strogg appears, and you shoot it. IDK, I thought it was quite enjoyable. I mean, what good FPS games are out now besides Hl2, BF2, CSS, Fear, and Stalker. A lot of those games came out quite a few years ago, and there is almost no good fps out now besides Stalker. And you almost got a new weapon every level and an upgrade. The weapons were also cool as opposed to HL2 weapons like stated above. They were pretty futuristic, but not too cartoony like the ones in Halo. HL2 weapons IMO are boring. You have a powerful handgun, wow, a smg, wow, a laser rifle, wow. The only HL weapon that really interested me was the crow bar and the crossbow. But now, every game has that damn crossbow. I admit, this wasnt the best game, but its atleast worthy of installing and finishing. I finished it in 2 sittings. The demo doesn't give it justice either.

HL2 weapons have a whole different purpose in the storyline. Quake 4 is a futuristic game and the whole quake series is based upon giving gamers over-the-top crazy guns to blow up their enemies. HL2's weapons follow suit to the fact that the earth is in a crisis. Weapons cant be manufactured as humans see fit and any weapon you can get hold of will do. Using a crossbow because there are no sniper rifles hanging about. The SMG is the only machine gun to use because the only way of finding one is by taking it from a dead co mbine soldier. Same with practically all the other weapons. If you had a complete modern weapon setup in HL2 it would completely ruin the atmosphere of the game. Thats what Half Life has always been about. The fact that you're a scientist not a soldier means you arent running around with a cigar in your mouth and bullets hanging over your shoulders holding a mini-gun. You got a crowbar and nothing else at the start of Half Life. Thats what its all about. Valve couldve given us a lightning gun if they wanted to. But it wouldve ruined the game. Besides. What better gun is there than the gravity gun? when its supercharged in the citadel throwing bodies about at your own accord never gets old

But what you said about quake being enjoyable is true. Its a sit-back-and-blaze-your-guns-at-aliens game with a modern touch. But these days its every FPS for itself. The genre needs diversity and you cant compare them all and rate them accordingly.

"When you show someone a screenshot of an FPS, and they have played the game, they may sometimes remember vaguely the area you're talking about.
When you show someone a screenshot of Half-Life 2, they will instantly say 'Oh, yeah! I remember that part!' Every moment of Half-Life 2 is different and memorable."

The phrase "They are FPS" used by the above poster is something I hate. It's not that "FPSes don't need to have story." It's that "Most makers of FPSes are IDIOTS and all of us have to live with that!"

You thought the marines' once-in-a-game quotes were funny? You listen to Half-Life 2's awesome personalities...
"And if you see Dr. Breen, tell him I said F-*CLANK* YOU!"
"We'll find you another pet headcrab! There are plenty to go around!"
"Sometimes...I dream about cheese."
"Oh no! Gordon!...He's dead.....Dibs on the suit?"
The death of a marine...I can deal with. He signed up for the army, I barely know him, I practically expect him to die at some point. But the characters from Half-Life 2 are unique and have a place. Alyx's suggested death brought on tears to everyone.

I played Quake 4 and honestly didn't see how it didn't get reviews in the 60's. It's the same old, same old, over and over. Shoot an enemy enough times until he dies; sometimes with a new weapon. Also make sure you don't shoot CLOSE with an explosive gun. That's basically all there is to Quake 4. There's no taking cover, not much dodging besides circle-strafing, etc. I got bored of it midway and quit...
Yeah that is the exact elitist attitude that is the true reason I hate Half Life 2. Most of the people who love it think they are better then everyone else b/c they like to think and have to use strategy in a game where you run arround shooting things.

This may come as a surprise to you but some of us like FAST paced games where you just run arround and blow stuff up. That does not mean the developers or us the players are dumber then you are. It just means that is what we like.

Anyway I'm glad you can deal with the death of a marine. I would rather have that annoying chick with the robob from Half Life 2 die but hey that's just me.

This really wasn't a thread to start a flame war. I was just telling others to check out Quake 4 and give it a try but w/e. Carry on
