Hi

First try at posting images on a forum…ok, I did it …wee.

Below are 3d model PICs of a concept I am currently implementing. The impetus for this layout was a long standing incredulity of the amount of dead space in the average atx based mid-tower case. So, I set out to max out the smallest box I could with the most maxed out system I can muster inside. All In a fittingly tiney budget. Bout 50% pre owned (not Necessarily used) components.

Basic system as it exist in part and/or parts

1 ) Gig. Ds3

2) 2 wd 250 gig drives, 1 sata, 1 pata

3) XfX 7600gs pci expres

4) 550 PSU

5) 2 rads 120 x 1, 1 Innovatek, 1 Blk Ice extreme

6) 6 maybe 7, 120 mm, 120 cfm fans

7 2 gigs Patriot extreme dual channel/

8) DD TDX CPU block, TT NB block

9) E6300 currently @ 3.4Ghz

10) Baby AT case

Basic Layout

rear 3/4 veiw, with acess/side pannel hinged down

Goals,

1)Do it on the cheap!!

2)Max out cooling, summarize. No HVAC, subject to out dor ambient tems .

3) Max out speed

3)jam it into the ninimal space (baby at in this case)

4)Put the only things I touch (dvd, reboot, on/of, maybe fan controller) on a little convenient box on my desk.

5)Easy acess to entrails

6)more, just can't recall

So that’s it, just want to start a “diary/saga" here. Feed back welcome. More pics of actual build in progress soon.

Regards, Croak

Ok, Heres the real stuff so far....

Case mod to date( hate to say it's but it pretty much been tin snips, hammer, screw drivers and pop rives. Most sheet metal, bits & bobs, savaged from a sacrificial midtower case, (got the baby atx and mid tower for twelve bucks)

1)Wacked out front panel,
2)Made 2 new front pieces with opening maxed out for shroud openings and bosses with 120mm fan screw pattern
3)Put in 2 parallel vertical customized “C” beams (home depot) to mount case fan and drive bay. (3.5 x 2)
4)Separate pump mounting plate (removable From front… pump mounted on its side)

Mounting.
1)All components that vibrate mounted on neoprene gaskets.
2) All screws that penetrate the box or mounting fixtures for mounting buzzy stuff go through rubber grommeted holes in metal.

What a fascinating read zzzzzzz……

BACK REAR QUARTER VIEW

FRNT LFT QUARTER VIEW

SIDE VIEW

Thing to do:
1)remove rear panel and replace with standard (though upside down an modded…alot) ATX panel
2)Fabricate/modify side panel to hinge at bottom + mounting ,obo on this door
3)Hack into PSU and eliminate supurfoulous cables (cout doen on sppase
4)Rationalize plumbing

Not sure of it’s final incarnation, Either going to play up’s humble kluge begining or put my slick design stamp allover it...

The onmly thing im concerned with is the extra tubing needed to allow the MOBO to flip out liek that. With only CPU it may be ok to run say another inch of tubing.
However for GPU cooling etc you will need alot of excess tubing.

Thanks for your reply

You’re very astute; sounds like you really get what I’m tying to do. The rearrangement of the water tubing is indeed something that’s going to have take some doing.

One part that is not an issue is cooling of the GPU. Its just a little, overclocked Gf 7600gs, it really doesn’t get hot, (Even If it did, It’s got 120cfm fan blowing right down it (side case fan). Only CPU and NB are water cooled, I might even eliminate the NB from the loop, right now with my e6300 @ 3.4Ghz max load, it only gets “warm†with stock Heat sink & a little overflow air from the current air cooled CPU heat tower thingy..

So it may just boil down to the CPU. In the scenarios I’ve dreamt up,
worse case scenario, it could use up to a foot of tube (zig zaging and possibly coiling up when case is closed. I’m not really concerned though in that I’ve got a fairly hearty 400 gph pump . Every thing is so compact, I’m not really using that much hose anyway

One other challenge of working in these tight confines is the keeping the hoses out of the air flow of the case and rads.

Thanxs for your input, you got a good handle on this adventure, feel free to pipe in any time.
