Druids $163 build

Thread Starter
After building the NF7-S/Duron that has been sitting around for ages with my son I got the itch to build something with a bit more power. Once again, Newegg came through for me with the opty price cut (LCB9E stepping) and an open box Lan Party Ultra-D mobo. All of the other parts are ones I have on hand.

I was very pleased to find that every part was shipped with the Ultra D. Being open box, I was ready to get only the mobo. So now the fun begins...

One Question...

The jumpers between the two PCI-E slots can be set for SLI or single card. My understanding is that both PCI-e slots run at 8x in SLI mode and in single card mode slot 1 runs at full 16x. Is this correct?

thanks

... ok... seriously doubt that the slots will run at half speed in SLI mode (would defeat the purpose in my opinion )...if you don't have two identical SLI cards that you are planning to run in SLI mode then don't set the slots to SLI... else set to SLI...

Actually it will not work 8x +8x. It works 16x for non-SLI and 8x + 4x for SLI. The nF4 ultra chipset can't share the 16 PCIe lanes between the PCIe slots, so the second PCIe slot has only the 4X lanes available from the SB and that were intended for other peripherals. It's a nice think what DFI did to enable SLI on a non-SLI chipset, but this is the drawback.

I'm not sure on that board. If it's an older board 2004-2005 it probably only has 16 PCI-e lanes, so SLI would be 8x, 8x or 16x, 1x. Newer boards can handle 16x, 16x, but the older boards (like mine, replaced by the A8N32-SLI) can't. What cards are you thinking of running in SLI? The only cards that actually lose a noticeble amount of performance are the 8800 series because of how they transfer data.

A X1900XT with 4 lanes open is actually faster than a 8800GTX with 4 lanes

Now that's not entirely true... the NF4 chipset has 24 PCI-E lanes in total, so it can use 8X-NC-2x-8X or 16x-1x-4x-2x

Also it's a unified architecture... meaning that the SB and NB is "integrated" into eachother

You'll need to mod the nForce4 Ultra chipset to be capable of SLI. It won't work unless you do the mod. Think its just a simple pencil mod.

You'll have a very similar system to mine, and all I can tell you is that it kicks ass in gaming and near enough every application available!

You shouldn't have to... the board has the jumper blocks to switch between SLI and single card modes.

Trust me mate, you do. Its not SLI unless you mod the chipsets. Its advertised on the box as "DXG Dual Xpress Graphics". No SLI certification to be found. I am holding the box and documentation in my hand right now

If you read the anandtech article I posted it explains the exact workings of the chipset much better than I could explain.

EDIT: Reading the DFI manual it also states that the LP UT nF4 Ultra-D is not capable of SLI and that the "SLI/Single VGA Select jumper - for 'nF4 SLI' models only."

I did read that after I posted, but not completly. Something about be able to run in 16x, 2x?

Yeah, if you want to run in 8x on both slots you need to do that mod. 16x and 2x seems pointless to me. 2x is going to be a major bottleneck on one of the cards. 8x and 8x is a hell of alot more balanced I'd say.

EDIT: Not to mention the driver issues which can be encountered trying to enable the 16x and 2x Dual graphics mode.
