Watercooling blowhole ductwork idea

Thread Starter
I recently cut a blowhole in the top of my pc and have mounted my wc radiator in there. Here is what it looks like now:

However, I am considering a mod of this which will involve essentially ducting the radiator intake (120mm) to the side of the case. This will allow the radiator to draw in fresh, cool air instead of warm air from the case. While this will not allow the case to be vented from the top, I still have other fans to keep it cool. Here is a drawing of what a cross section of my case would look like with this in place:

Let me know what you think. Also, I need to know where I could get 120mm ducting and supplies since I have not been able to locate any yet, only 80 mm. So, let me know if you think there will be a performance/cooling loss if I use a 80mm to 120mm adapter.
Thanks!

So are you drawing cool air into the PC? That would defiantly, and it had been done before with great results.

yes, it would, however I was wondering if converting the 120mm opening down to 80mm ducting would decrease my airflow significantly. I do not want to restrict the radiator that's cooling my cpu.

It shouldn't hinder the fans performance too much. Alot of it depends on the rated static pressure of the fan you will be using.

One we know this we can apply some basic fluid laws to get an idea of how much of a drop we will see, however one basic law of incompressible fluids is that the mass flow rate stays constant, however air is compressible so we have to take this into account. My guess is that going from 120>80mm ducting is not going to hinder the fan too much and is worth the sacrifice to draw in cool air rather than warm air from the inside of the case.

well i think it's an amazing idea, ted, since i helped you come up with it after all... anyways, i'm thinking some sort of metal ductwork with rubber lining. then you can have it sealed, like it should be so as not to suck in any hot air from inside the pc, and then you can make it custom-sized.

maybe a sheet of thin aluminum or something of that nature - something easily manipulated? we will play wit it when you come over to finish our lapping project - i'm thinking friday is go. until then, i think my project is halted since i'm waiting on the paper. not to hijack; just saying we can play with this if you make your way over tomorrow.

i'm looking now for some stuff that might help

EDIT: the blowhole was my idea too - funny how that works!

My last WC system, I had a dual 120mm fan radiator mounted in blowhole fashion and my biggest problem was airflow into it, so you're idea looks great. If you can, I would suggest mounting a removable air filter of your intake tube as well.

whatever sounds good. i believe in using hardware stores in the place of expensive online stores.
