HELP! Sempron came out with heatsink!

Thread Starter
I needed to remove the heatsink to get to the hard drive in a system at work. The problem is, the CPU came out stuck to the heatsink, and won't come off (I think whoever put the system together used the arctic silver that glues stuff together). The worse problem is, I tried putting it back in, and now the system won't boot. Did that kill the mobo, or the processor, or both? Any ideas?

stop, take a breath. now they used an adhesive compound you didn't ruin anything. well maybe the cpu but what i do and i don't suggest is taking a very small flat heat screwdriver and running it around the heatsink slowly applying pressure to slowly have it lift from the heatsink

Happened to me on an HP Pavillion S478...

Check out all the caps and make sure no pins are missing/bent/broken off inside socket...

I think he got the processor off already..

If not, use a flat head screwdriver and get as close to the IHS possible...

I removed an IHS by doing this... worked too!

Try twisting the CPU and heatsink. That usually works to detach them. If that doesn't work, either carefully apply some rubbing alcohol where you can, or heat the heatsink a bit to make it easier to detach.

As for reinserting, don't do that. There's a switch you have to pull/push, I don't remember, but it's probably not inserted all the way, since you can't really do anything with the heatsink on.

Twisting it worked, slowly, but it worked. Now I have nice indentations in my fingers... It boots up fine still, so it's good to go again!

Thanks for all the help guys!

Good work, I'm amazed you didn't bend pins when you put it in with the lever closed.
