A Guide For Modifying Desktops V0.2 BETA
Difficulty Rating: 2.5/5 (It all depends on you.) ^^;â€
Last Update: June 27, 2007 @ 17:13
Suggested for any Windows. (If anyone has tried on any other type of OS, please notify me.)

Before I begin giving an explanation for modifying desktops, I would like to explain a little about myself and this so-called "FAQ" or "guide". I have not noticed in here yet, but some other forums and other places, many people look at images of extravagant desktops and ask, "How did you make your desktop like that?" or something of that sort.

Why Should I Modify My Desktop?
"Why should I modify my desktop?" could actually be a very difficult question to answer, but I can give my opinion on it; I will try not to be pursuasive. If I were you, I would modify my desktop because it expands how awesome my computer already is. If you are an overclocker, you can do more by expanding the potential of your desktop. It is fun to do, yet aggrivating, but finished products usually look very appealing and very easy to worth with. You can also get some extra features which makes things easier to look at. You will understand very soon enough, after trying your trial of modifying your desktop. Many people do this, why do you not? Modifying your desktop has a broad horizon of customizable programs. It is very hard to cover everything, but the things that I am currently introducing are "what you see is what you get" sort of desktops. If you have started with a background on your desktop, do not stop there, you can continue to do more, then you can make your desktop even more awesome than it already is.

(OPTIONAL READ) The information within the two dash dividers are inaccurate, therefore please do not flame me, but if you must please critique. These include my ideas and opinions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, you may want to ask, "Why is this relevant to 'Overclocking'?". This is actually very relevant to overclocking or at least can be of better use of overclocking because our computers can multi-task and run programs faster and quicker, without affecting our other programs or while we are playing games. This is a hassle, since I am using a Dell Dimension 8200; it was good for its time, but now we have customized built computers and we can access the potential within our customized built computers, am I wrong? When I modify my desktop, it needs to run a few programs; these programs are needed in modifying your desktop to your desire. Basically, sometimes it lags my computer when I am playing games and it also makes the computer a bit slower, at least to me. Well I do not really mind since modifying my desktop actually makes me feel that it is very beautiful and can be useful to a point. I am very sure, if an overclocked computer or even faster computers can handle these little programs easier. It also depends how much of it you run. These are not really the important things, but it could just be me.

Anyhow, now I would like to talk about my self in the process of making this modifying desktop guide. To some, modifying desktop seems to be a very vague idea, but to me, I really believe it should be done. Since I am an anime enthusiast, or an anime otaku, it is obvious that I love anime. Therefore, I must modify my desktop with anime themes and such. Though, modifying your desktop does not mean you have to only modify it with an anime theme, since there are plenty of other types of themes out there. There are many people that modify their desktops because it looks awesome and depending on the programs you use, they can be of use to the daily things. I believe that modifying your desktop is enjoyable and hectic at times, since you might not know what to put together. It relates to modifying your computer cases too, so if you know the feeling of modifying cases, it would be the same for modifying desktops.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Modifying My Desktop Hard?
Modifying your desktop is the easiest thing you can ever do in/with a computer. The difficult part would just be choosing the right theme and placing each and every thing in the right place [organization]. I do not know about other hard-core desktop modifiers, but to me, I really think there's only two types of themes our there; a Set Theme and a Collage Theme. Both types of themes have their difficulties, but if you do it correctly, you might end up with something amazing to look at and for people to say, "That's some awesome desktop you got there." Of course, this would make you happy, though you'd be happy enough just being able to see such a beautiful desktop that you have long made. Anything achieved with hard work and time is always worth it, even if it comes out horrible.

What Is A Set Theme And Collage Theme?
A Set Theme would be a theme on one topic, and you try to collect skins for your programs to match this theme. A Collage Theme would be a theme on more than one topic and you would mix the skins of each of your programs to synchronize [mix] together in order to look to the best with your background.

What Should I Be Aware Of Before Beginning My Desktop Modification?
There are a few things which you should be aware before you start your desktop modification. It may include either of the following: Harm to your eyes, Waste of your time, Your electric bill (Though, I believe most of us leave our computer(s) on anyways.), and you should be aware and thinking only about the following:

1. Theme (Set or Collage)
2. Topic within Set or Collage Theme
3. Background
4. Programs/Softwares & Skinnables(Things that can have a skin like cursors.)
5. Skins
6. Insight (Despite this not being on the top, insight has the most importance. Insight means your imagination.)

You can start from anywhere you want to modify your desktop, but as for me, I have done this a dozen of times, but I will give you a few steps to follow while modifying your desktop after I have introduced to you some programs and given a pretty in-depth details about the products that you can or will use to conduct your desktop modifications. These steps would be wholly out of my opinions and like I said you can start where ever you want, since you end up in the same place, especially when you have good insight. It is as simple as doing multiplication, division, additions, and/or subtraction, no matter how you start you end up with the same.

What Programs Are You Talking About?
You must be wondering, “What programs are you talking about?†You can tell that I avoided from stating the programs and explaining about these programs. These are the main programs you would need to modify your desktop. These programs are the ones that I know of and have used before, if anyone has any other programs, please share. All the information below has been re-written by me and will be wrapped inside quote tags. (Note: If you have any program site for any desktop modification, please PM me or reply here. Some programs many should know, but there could be a lot of modifications to them to merge with the theme of your desktop. Sample: [URL OF PROGRAM] , [PROGRAM NAME] , [FREE / PAY])

Free Programs for Customizing your Desktop:

AOL Instant Messenger
Quote:
AOL Instant Messenger is an advertised freeware that allows the registered users to instant message other registered users across the Internet or in otherwords, you basically text over the Internet. AOL Instant Messenger is oftenly referred to as "AIM". AIM is widely used instant messenger application by many people, besides MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and etcetera, over the world; it is also developed by AOL.
What is there to modify for AIM? You can edit the log on logo and other things, if you do know what you are doing. I usually only change the log on logo. You can do this with a program called "ResHack". You can download the attachment, "[ResHack].rar", below. There is already a "read me" file inside the WinRAR file, so you do not need to worry. If you seem to have any problem doing it, you can ask me, though I believe the read me file with the ResHack.exe is very understandable. I did not write the following read me file, but you can still ask me questions about it. It is pretty straight forward for what you should do. It only tends to tell you how to edit the log on logo, so you will not mess around with the other things. Wtih ResHack you can change almost any images that is within the AIM application. Be aware you should be sure to know what you are doing. Therefore, using ResHack, AIM is very skinnable or customizable.

How Should I Start Modifying My Desktop? (Still under construction)

//Choosing your programs////////////////////////////////////////////////
Sound Lilith Player VERSUS WinAMP
2007-06-27
Oh, I just have tried Sound Lilith Player, I actually believe it could be better than WinAMP. It is very simple to use and it even has a converter unlike WinAMP, but only a 30-day trial. This converter converts music files into wave-files. Of course all media players load and work the same though. The disadvantage is that Sound Lilith Player is only in Japanese, it could be in another language, but I cannot seem to find the PLUG-IN for it, probably because it is in Japanese, and my Japanese is limited. I would look even deeper, since this is my first time using it. When I find out any thing more interesting about this media player, I shall inform more. I will keep an entry especially for this. It also has this little cute icon that tells you what type of file extension it is. No VIDEO! If anyone has used this, please notify me so we can discuss about it.
2007-06-XX
Personally, I have not used SoundPlayer Lilith, but it should be the same as WinAMP. For SoundPlayer Lilith, less space used as well. I would personally choose WinAMP over SoundPlayer Lilith because WinAMP includes a lot of things, and I am a person that likes detail, but one thing bad about WinAMP is that, since there are different versions of it, finding the right skin is very difficult. Sometimes the older skins may not even work on WinAMP, and for WinAMP, there are really too much features, and for that the skin cannot always cover everything, well the skin makers usually do not cover everything at least. As for SoundPlayer Lilith, there are a wider selection of skins. I will use SoundPlayer Lilith someday so I can tell you guys how it is, but if anyone has already used it, then please share your views.
//Choosing your programs////////////////////////////////////////////////

Method One:
1. Choose between a "Set" or "Collage" theme.
2. If you have chosen a "Set Theme", please proceed to #4; else, go to #3.
3. If you have chosen a "Collage Theme", please proceed to #5.
4. Since you have chosen a "Set Theme", you must choose your type of set topic. After you have chose what type of topic you want, then proceed to #6.
5. Since you have chosen a "Collage Theme", you can either choose a very vague/general topic or vague/general topic. (An example of a very vague/general topic would be everything itself, therefore you can put animations, scenery, idols, and etcetera together. An example of a vague/general topic would be like anime, and all the different anime's there are.) If you have chosen a very vague/general topic, proceed to #8; else if your have chosen a vague/general topic, proceed to #10.
6. Now you have a theme, choose a few backgrounds that relates to that topic because your other skins might not match or look nice with your background, so you will have to play around. After you have done so, proceed to #7.
7. Since you have your backgrounds, start with one of them, and with your programs, the ones that were stated above, skin them again and again until you have one that fits what you like.
8. Since you have chosen a very vague/general topic, you can start by choosing any background(s), and then you can proceed to #9.
9. After you have finished choosing your background(s), you may start skinning the programs stated above.
10. Since you have chosen a vague/general topic, you can start by choosing the background(s) that relates to a vague/general topic. After that, please proceed to #11.
11. Since you have chosen your background(s), you can also start skinning any of the programs stated above.
12. Just repeat the steps of trying to fit the skins with everything again and again. The most important thing is, just have fun!!~

You should be done at this point. If you have any questions please ask me. I do not overly do my desktop for certain reasons. I will post two desktop images, one past desktop image and a current desktop image:

Past Desktop (Includes: WinAMP, Rainlendar, Edit-Logo AIM)
Current Desktop (Includes: WinAMP, Rainlendar, Rainmeter, Edit-Logo AIM)
Past Desktop (Includes: WinAMP, Rainlendar, Edit-logo AIM)
First Desktop (Includes: WinAMP, Rainlendar, Rainmeter, Edit-Logo AIM, Quick Changer, Fully-changed Icons, Stardock: ObjectX)[My First Modified Desktop, this was to the MAX. So this is actually better than my current desktop, since it has a lot more things to show.]

Note: There is still areas that can be updated such as cursors, windows log in, windows log in sound, and etcetera. I am only talking some basic and some programs that could be unknown to others. When I come across something new or anything more interesting for this topic, I will update. This guide is still at its infant point. I will put even more work to it a little later. I know I need to put some easy installation methods, which I will do a bit later on.

Thanks, I'll keep updating it, since it's still in it's beta stage. I'm going towards more detailed. Since this is quite the "obvious" type of work. Have to do it for the people who will have trouble. So I need to think of easier ways to set up each of the programs. Though, I would like to think it's very obvious. For now, if you want to add skins, add it to the "Skin" directory of WinAMP, Rainlendar, and Rainmeter. To tell you the truth, I actually forgot to use some of them. I'll refresh my memory tonight. =P I should post an image with the Quickchanger, it's actually pretty neat if you have a nice set up for your desktop. Different backgrounds, I mean.

Nope I am not Japanese, I am just studying it. ^^;

I used to hold a "Desktop Contest" last year.

EDIT: You can use some of the stuff in there if you find anything useful. I'll provide the source if you ask.

Bump!

Anyways, I updated a bit now. I will fill you in how FACE goes. And it is a bit colorful too. Though, I have not got to the things in RED. I have been busy, will get to it. I hope everyone could join and modify their desktop and share it. I really enjoy looking at the modified desktops, especially if it relates to Japanese-animation. I usually go to hongfire.com, just to look at desktops. Some are spectacular, but some are just boring.
