I think this is because of the data density as the new 1000 GB HDD with 7200 rpm nearly reach the read/write speed of Raptors.
No, the density is identical for every Raptor. They all use enterprise class 36.7 gb platters. The larger ones just have multiple platters and is the reasoning for the odd sizes. Also, you should read carefully what those charts are comparing. You're looking at the older 8mb cache Raptor and one of the very first revisions. If you look at more accurate, current charts, you'll see that the performance is nearly identical.

Was just a theory about the density, sorry when that was written wrong.

Also I seen a lot benchmarks as I was looking to buy me the Raptors.
They all told that the 74 GB model is the better choice.
Also as it is not double in price.
