AMD Phenom FX

AMD IS COMING out with Phenom SKUs at last. The official roadmaps we've seen push it out another quarter from late Q3 to early Q1/08 on the desktop side.

Officially, the Phenom FX will be November or December for the 1S variants, 2S will be Q1/08. The newest information from AMD shows that there will be a 1S FX-80 at 2.2-2.4GHz, the spread at this point is somewhat worrying, a 2S FX-90 at the same speeds, and an FX-91 at 2.4-2.6GHz. TDPs are not officially listed.
Doesn't look good for AMD

I dont like it ether but i would rather AMD take what little time they have left a make the CPUs as good as they can so they downt get ownd by intel,I realy do hope they can pull that 40% of performance out of there @$$ for there sake.

at those clock speeds they are gonna have to pull at least 15 opperation per cycle and be beastly overclockers to compete with c2d. but c2d has already engulfed the market so that wont happens. and intel will have a new chip that will beat the phenoms within a couple months of the phenom release... that is if phenom is better than c2d

There have been mixed reports/rumours between 15-18 ops/clock.

Only two things seem sure:
-Phenoms won't be passing 3ghz any time soon.
-They'll have at least 15 ops per clock.

i think its about time Amd big wigs stockpile the research plants with food and water and lock all staff in til these phenoms are ready to hit the shelves. microsoft make operating systems quicker than Amd make processors

... I thought this was a NEWS Thread ...

18 operations per cycle sounds realistic to me. AMD needs to bring back the competition! They currently own the low-end market (which is HUGE), now for the revolution! I would drop the FX name and get something schnazzy, like GP 2/4/8

They can't afford it... Intel, being much bigger, has a number of development teams running parallel designing the next few processors. AMD can afford only few development teams.
Once again...

Maybe it'll pwn like we fanboys hope. (I'm a fanboy at least...) Then we can be happy, while Intel people are unhappy.
'bout time.

Unfortunately, I don't see these chips performing well at all at this rate. Simply adding a shared L3 cache, which may not even make it into the home desktop market, and changeing a few execution algorithms isn't going to instantly make the Phenoms perform 15 or 18 operations per cycle. Besides, most people already know that ops-per-cycle is a very ineffective way of evaluateing performance.

The way I see it, AMD have been wacking off about their future quad cores ever since Core 2 came out. Here we are a year later and the best we've actually seen so far is the inefficient FX-74. By the time the Phenoms are on the shelves Nehelem will be only a couple of months away. An onboard MCH removeing any limit on the bandwidth of a Core 2 would remove any claim to fame that AMD currently has.

I was hopeing that AMD would have their CPU's ready for around September, though now my only option is going to be either an 800FSB or 1333FSB Core 2 Quad. I'm happy to switch my motherboard, but I most certainly wont wait around for performance whilst AMD sits on its hands. On a side note, that's why I opted for an 8800GTS before the X2900XT was released, I simply grew tired of the waiting and extravagant claims of performance.
