Removing Intel CPU Stock Fan & Heatsink

Thread Starter
Hey, I'm having difficulty removing the Intel CPU fan that came with my computer. It's way too loud so I ordered a Zalman fan compatible with my motherboard.

My motherboard is an ASRock socket 775, and my processor is Intel Pentium D (x2 CPUs). The Zalman fan came today, so I had a look at the Intel fan and tried to remove it. There are 4 fasteners on the fan that you have to rotate and then they pop up, which I have done, but it is still completely fastened down.

How can I remove the fan and heatsink to allow me to install my new Zalman one?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Still having the no luck, are the 4 fasteners supposed to completely come off? All I have done so far is make them loose and pop up, they're still attached to it and I suppose covering screws?

I just can't seem to get it off

well if its anything like mine there should be curved arrows on the top of the fasteners. to unlock them the arrow heads have to be closest to the heatsink (turning counter clockwise) once they are unlocked it should be relatively easy to pull them up.

The Intel guide simply says that you undo each fastener by rotating them, and then pull them until you hear a click/pop (which I have done) and that the fan should just lift out, but it isn't

It's as if it's stuck down. Another forum someone had a similar problem, and they said that the thermal paste had almost glued it down.

Could this be the case for me?

I have a 775 and when I was swapping to my Freezer 7 hsf, I had to gently twist and pull straight up to get mine off...

Once you get it off you'll see like the other guy said it's as if it is nearly glued on...

Just do it very carefully and as long as you are correct that all 4 pins are loss...

Hope this helps alil bit...
