Hyperthreaded CPU Cause of stuttering

Thread Starter
I own a pentium 4 HT 3.4GHz Northwood CPU. I have been trying to find out for years why every game i would play stutters and has generally jerky gameplay when involved in heavy "firefight" areas. Yesterday i did some research into it and found that if i set the affinity to 1 cpu instead of 2, it somewhat improves performance but does not eliminate the stuttering completely. I am nearly towards the end of ending this laggyness. Anyone have any ideas?

That's weird becouse I never had jerkey gameplay with my old CPU which had HT, It was a Prescott though. what games does this occur in? maybe the games are too demanding for your GPU?

Why is it that in call of Duty: United Offensive and BF2 that i get annoying stutters when involved in heavy firefight areas, especialy explosions where the data skips and jerks.

i forgot to mention non of my parts are more than 2 years old, i have tried drivers, updates, patches, fixes. the only thing that makes a small improvement is the affinity setting to 1 cpu

Yeah, I have heard that HT can slow your system down in some cases. Have your tried turning the settings down in the game to see if it stops?

the stutters are caused by the page file being accessed the only way to reduce it is to free up some ram before you play, get some more ram, get a second drive and put the page file on that or get a faster hard drive

i have 2GB RAM, thats more than enough for any application these days. my HDD is brand new only a few days old. its got 8 MB Cache and runs at 7200rpm. i have always wondered if there is a setting in the bios maybe holding back my performance?
