4 GBs DDR2 800 worth it?

Thread Starter
I am looking at G.Skill 2GB (2x1GB) 240-pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) at $104.99 and it is taking all of my self control not to whip out my credit card.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231065

Question: If I am sticking with WinXP and not planning on going to Vista anytime soon, should I get 2 more gigs for my system?

At the moment no.......

In the near future.......yes

At these prices......definately

Go for it, you have nothing to lose

But only if you have a 64bit OS otherwise all four gigs won't be utilised.

EDIT: Do you have XP home or PRO? All 4GB will only be recognised in PRO

4 GB's (as tempting as it is, I agree) will only be utilized on a 64 bit operating system.

Stick with the 2 GB package if you're on 32 bit; those G.Skill's will dominate, guaranteed ;>.

Edit - I don't see these prices dropping much more, and certainly not for a while. May as well go for them now.

Is there a big difference in WinXP Pro 64-bit and Pro 32-bit in performance with extra 2gb for $100?

Is my system:

8800 GTS 640 v/card
680i SLI LT mobo
e6600 2.4 Ghz cpu
2 gigs 800 MHz crucial ballistic ram

vista ready? If only the RAM isn't no big deal, but I want to make sure the cpu, mobo, and card are able to support Vista.

Cheers

Bob yes your pc is vista ready.....i'm running vista on mine

And Nolander, i couldn't possibly comment on that as i have never seen a performance comparison. But for a programe that is able to utilise the 64bit extension i am presuming XP Pro would be the victor yes.

I just googled some info on Win XP Pro 64 and I found that you only need Win XP Pro 64 if you are going beyond 4 gb. Is that true?

4Gb will NOT be utilized in any 32-bit OS. Only 64 bit. I believe the max is 3.5 Gb, but I'm unsure on the exact number.
