GTR2 - Startup problems

Thread Starter
I started having problems with GTR2 around the time I swapped out my old 7900 GT SLI setup for my current 8800GTS (single) card. Back when I was SLI'd, I had no problems with any of my games, but when I went up to the 8-series card, a couple of games went sour (KotOR II and GTR2).

The errors were the generic "<program name>.exe has to close because it has encountered a problem..." Googles suggested that the problem may have its roots in SecuROM copy protection detecting virtual drives on my machine. I thought this was odd because I never installed DaemonTools or Alcohol 120% or any other kind of virtual drive emulators on my machine (that I know about).

Last week I reformatted and reinstalled my OS, which (theoretically) should have wiped out any possible software-based conflicts. I reinstalled all my games, and while most of them worked, the two problematic ones remained problematic. I found a fix for KotOR II, but not for GTR2.

Does anyone have any suggestions? SimBin doesn't seem to offer any solutions, and communications with them have been difficult at best (as in, perhaps in my frustration I was unable to find an email address to their tech support section).

Thanks in advance!

Did you go from XP to Vista or did you go XP -> XP or Vista to Vista...

I can't think of anything other than reinstall the game. If its vista run in compatibility mode with XP.

Oh and in the run for -noprefetch after the .exe"

Stayed with XP. Nuked the original install, then started afresh. I didn't even save the old data I had (didn't need them, as this is just a gaming machine anyway).

Thanks for the tips. I hope one of them works.

I had that when I was using daemon tools, and it was because I hadnt hid my drives from secure rom. I can send you a program that will hide your drives from secure rom if you want.

That's the weird part. If I've got DaemonTools or any other emulator software on my rig, I don't know how I put it in there.

If I get desperate, permission to PM you, sir!

@ MGX1016 - Will try reinstalling the game.

Thanks again!

Permission granted. You have to rip CD1 to a .iso (or something of the likes) file and put it in a folder. Then mount it using daemon tools. All in all its worth the 5 minute ripping time of the CD. Never have to worry about game discs again!

I fiddled and diddled around with video card settings.

It turns out that GTR2 freaks out when the nVidia settings have the AA and AF settings on anything other than "Application Controlled." I reset these to "Application Controlled," and now everything is hunky-dory.

Thanks to MGX1016 and Drax again for taking their time to help a fellow OCNer out!
