Upgrading my System

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, my system truly needs an upgrade to play some newer games (and any SM3.0 game... I'm really missing out)

I'm going to upgrade:
My heatsink: Stock HSF --> Tuniq Tower
My video card: Sapphire x800 GTO --> Nvidia 7900GS KO (or x1950pro)
My CPU & Mobo: ASUS P5ND2-Sli Deluxe and Pentium 4 3.2GHz --> Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (cannot find -1 revision, but this may be it?) and either the e6300 or the e4300

I'm pretty sure the HSF is a good choice, but I really cannot decide between the 7900 or the x1950! The 7900 is a bit cheaper at Direct Canada, and if I go with this, I can safely upgrade to DX10 in a year or so. Any suggestion on the GFX?

Also, I truly believe that my CPU needs an upgrade. Im not sure if I should spend 100$ on a P4 D 3.2, or get the e4300/e6300 and really overclock it with the Tuniq Tower I've also heard the Gigabyte 965 is a reaally good overclock so I hope this will be a good choice.

Overall, I really need help to just verify that these are good parts to purchase to upgrade my current rig soo.. opinions everyone?

Thanks,

Nick

Get the 7900GS. The X1950Pro doesn't overclock very well.

I'd defiantly go for the C2D and since you only have DDR2 667 get the E4300 because it has a FSB.

The Tuniq Tower is great, Get the E4300, and that Gigabyte board is killer. Also It is a matter of preference for the vid card. I believe they both perform about the same.

E4300 and the Gigabyte sounds pretty good! Hopefully I can get some nice overclocks out of it with the Tuniq Tower. Any more opinions?
Also 7900GS hows the stock cooling on it? I dont think im good enough to replace the heatsink and the ramsinks! Hopefully I should be able to overclock it a bit too Also how loud is the 7900GS?

And I'm also thinking of putting 4 Yate Loons in the case... I shouldn't be able to hear those right?

Nice choice of CPU cooler. Going from stock, you're going to be happy. I'm still on stock, but soon going to get water

Agreed with everyone before

E4300 is a good pick, given the FSB of 200MHz, and the fact you currently own DDR2 RAM. The E4400 might be a good alternative, with the higher multi.

Gigabyte DS3. Nothing wrong about it. Nice board!

Video card: either is fine. ATI X1950PRO is faster at stock, 7900GS overclocks better. take your pick.

Heatsink: need I say more?

Thanks everyone I feel much better about it now I have no problem with spending the extra 30$ on the 4400, but is the multi really worth it? I dont much understand the speed of RAM clocks, but with only 667MHz speeds, would I benefit much from the different muli?

Also, I edited my first post, but specifically the video card I am looking at is the EVGA 7900 GS KO, which is cheaper than XFX's plain 7900 by loads, and apparently has an upgraded heatsink? (http://www.directcanada.com/products...nufacture=EVGA)

Thanks again for everyones help!

Well with 667 ram you can only go up to 333Mhz on the fsb before you start to overclock the ram. Depending on the quality you may not get much over stock, so with an fsb of 333 you COULD get the E4300 up to 3Ghz or you COULD get the E4400 up to 3.3Ghz With a DS3 and a Tuniq this should be pretty easy to do

EDIT: Just realised you have mismatched ram as well, this may have a bit of a hit on its overclocking. If you have any money left over invest in a nice 1GB or 2GB kit of PC2-6400 ram

shhh I love my mismatched ram
In all seriousness I suppose I could spring for another pair, maybe after I hit a wall with the 4400 (thanks for that great info.. I dont mind paying 30$ for 300MHz ) but for now I'll stick with my mismatched OCZ + Corsair ram, after spending 600$ on this im not eager for spend another 100$ on 2GB of ram! Hopefully my 1.5GB will hold up in Vegas!

Thanks everyone, I think I'll be ordering this monday afternoon
