IMHO the zalman cooler is very overrated. I use the 9500 and am disappointed with the performance. You should consider lapping the proc though. Also how much thermal paste did u use when you put it on?

here's what I tried once with good results...

clean the CPU and heatsink surface with goo-gone or goof-off (same stuff) then clean after with high quality alcohol...

I put the TIM of choice on there and spread it out...put on the heatsink and fasten it down...give it a little twist back and forth then pop it back off and wipe the heatsink clean with a lint free towel (NOT touching the CPU) and then I put it back on leaving just the TIM on the CPU...

I have learned that I always get too much on the cpu and it hinders heat transfer...and I can seem to get it thing enough to be semi-transparent...so this works for me...1st time I tried it I droped 2c at idle and 4c under load...

Yeah. Also, just because it's shiny doesn't mean it is flat.

Some of the new CPU IHS's are also not very flat. You want FLAT. Not shiny, BUT shiny is also something to improve cooling.
