8500GT... good enough?

Thread Starter
Hi all

I'm brand new here, and fairly new to all this. I'm putting together a new computer to play with and I got a PNY 8500GT. Am planning on doing SLI eventually, but I'm seeing really good stuff with the 8600GT. I noticed though that there's less RAM on the 8600, but it's DDR3. Whereas the 85 has 512 DDR2. Would it be worth sending my 8500 back? I haven't used it yet, and for an extra $10 right now I wouldn't want to regret it.

Thanks very much

-Mark

Welcome to the forum please Add your pc specs here: http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem

Well the 8500GT is a good card but its not better than the 8600GT.If you get the chance to send back the 8500 then try to get the 8600GT go for it.

Thanks! I will do so. Are all the manufacturers of 8600GT cards the same? Is there a better one to look out for? Some to NOT get?

Thanks!

You must get an eVGA card. It is better than all of the rest, by a long short. With RMA's, warranties, and quality. I would pay $50 more for an eVGA over an MSI or whatever. But, the great thing is, they are very evenly priced.

The 8500 would be worth sending back for an 8600. The 8500 has crap benchmarks, especially for dx9 games. A 7600 GS beats the 8500 GT in most game benches.

Personally, I would try to return the 8500GT and save up for at least an 8800GTS 320MB if you want to play DX10 games. The 8600 is basically a 7600 series that can play DX10 games. The only problem is, DX10 will require a powerful GPU in order to render in DX10 mode without sacrificing some eye candy.

Thanks everyone... I got the Return number today... so Monday it's going back!

Now, the next question is...

Is the performance of the GTS worth the price increase over the GT (8600)?

I'm doing the reading about it, so I'd obviously plan on doing stuff to it. But is the performance worth the price?

I just don't have the funds for a 8800! haha
