ATI X1900xtx vs. HD2900xt

Thread Starter
I have had my ATI X1900xtx for about 9 months give or take, and it is still selling for about them same as what I purchased it for, which in most cases is around the same as what the HD2900xt is selling for. When I looked at the specs it looked like the HD2900xt was a little faster, but if that is true then why is it selling for the same price as the old card?

I am thinking about upgrading to the HD2900xt, but I don't want to waste my time if it isn't worth it. I am running Vista, so the DirectX 10 would be nice; one the games start using it that is...

Thanks in advance for the help, Jon

The 2900XT is quite abit faster. But in turn the (cheaper) 8800GTS can match the 2900XT. But you X1900XTX has alot of life left in it. No need to sell it yet =]

I have a different opinion. If after a year you can sell your VID card for almost the same money as what you've paid for, than do it right away. Why? It is likely you can still find someone to buy it. In 3-4 months there will be some Dx10 games and maybe enough alternatives in the midrange, so that your card will be much less appealing to a eventual buyer. In the following months the market price of your card would probably tumble, and for the same upgrade (from x1900xtx to 2900XT) you're likely to pay more.

So, which one is the bast graphics card available in the $400 to $500 range? When you say that my x1900xtx has a lot of life in it what do you mean? Is the HD2900xt not worth selling my x1900xtx and then paying an extra $100? I really don't even play games that much, mostly only AOE3, but I have a 22" 1680x1250, and when I do decide to play a first person shooter I want to play it at that resolution, and my x1900xtx doesn't do that as well as I would like it too. Thanks for the help, Jon

In that range and for just a little bit more, the 8800GTX is the best.

Its a tough call right now to say where the 2900XT stands. The DDR4 model should show some improvement over the current card. I believe the 2900XT is better in most benchmarks than the GTS, BUT, that all depends on the reviews you read. Some say this, some say that.

So your saying that the 8800GTS and 2900XT are neck and neck, but the 8800GTX is the best card of them all right? Is the 8800GTX worth shelling out the extra $200, or are the differences not that noticeable? I have always used ATI in the past, except for the new Dell M90 beast of a laptop I just got at work; it has a NVIDA card, and for the most part I like its software better than ATIs, except that it doesn't have an option to OC the card in the NVIDA software like ATI Catalyst Center does.

Sell your old card if you can get the same amount you paid for it it will most likely be easier to sell any of the new cards for more money in a few months.

To put it simple:
8800GTX - best - 500$
2900XT - lower than the GTX - in the 350-400 range
8800GTS 640MB - close, but lower than the ATI, 350-375$ range
8800GTS 320 and 1950XTX close, nVidia supports Dx10 on this one.

Choose in function of your budget, imo the 2900XT is the best $/performance.

I was saying that if you can sell now the VID card, sell it. You'll probably get 250-280$ for it. Now there are no Dx10 applications, so your VID card is not handicapped in any way.

When the Dx10 games will show up (september), your card won't be able to run them. No man in his right mind will pay more than 150$ for a card than CAN'T run the latest games at all.

Now, you can get a decent price for it, in 3 months I guarantee you won't. The 8800GTS or the 2900XT are good cards for the money, and right now you'll have to put out a mere 100$ for the upgrade - in fall you'll put out minimum 200$ if not 250$. Plus you'll have for these 3 months a better card.

IMO who still had a x19x0 card should sell them while still possible, that is if they care about the money.
