For what you say you\\'ll be doing, you should be fine with a Brisbane 3600+. The first AM2+ chips will probably be quad-core and cost way more than a Brisbane does right now. Plus, you won\\'t be needing quad-core for AOE or burning DVDs. If money is tight, a Brisbane will fit the bill. You can get a Brisbane 3600+ and a decent OCing mobo for less than $150 these days. You definitely can\\'t get that kind of deal with Intel right now.
I dont understand... a 3600 isnt a AM2 chip????

Yes that is a better CPU then the 3600 BUT a good OC mobo cost more for intel and the CPU itself costs more.

A pentium D are you serious?? First of all they are netburst, second of all they are hot, third of all they suck..... As for E4300 that wouldnt be worth it because of reasons said to smallia.

I agree the brisbane 3600+ would be a while worthwhile investment, at a lower cost.
But redsox asked about the e2160 so i gave him some information. Also he already has a core 2 duo so motherboard wont be an issue, he was just after making some money

And definately agree, dont get a pentium d, but as he already has a mobno, it might be a choice to consider due to such low prices.

It is an AM2 cpu, we were stating that when they become availible you could get an AM2+ board, and wait for the AM3 cpu's which willfit into the AM2+ board. To futureproof yourself, an AM2+ board will accept AM2, AM2+ and AM3 cpus

AM2+ FTW

"The Socket AM2+ is the immediate successor to Socket AM2 currently used in several AMD processors such as Athlon 64 X2, Socket AM2+ will be a mid migration from Socket AM2 to Socket AM3 and will be fully compatible with Socket AM2, so processors designed for Socket AM2 will work on Socket AM2+ motherboards and vice versa."

"AMD confirmed that AM2 processors will work in AM2+ motherboards and AM2+ processors will work on AM2 motherboards. However, due to the lack of support of HyperTransport 3.0 and separated power planes in Socket AM2 motherboards, AM2+ chips will be limited to the specifications of Socket AM2 (HyperTransport 2.0 at the speed of 1 GHz, one power plane for both Cores and IMC). AM2 chips will not benefit from faster HyperTransport and separated power planes on AM2+ motherboards as they do not support them, AM2+ motherboard then fall back to compatibility mode using AM2 specifications.

According to confirmations from AMD, Socket AM2+ will have a compatibility path with Socket AM3, AM3 processors will work in AM2+ motherboards; however, AM2+ processors will not be compatible with AM3 motherboards."

once again i point you to wikipedia's AM2+ socket page

*EDIT* having just re-read all the posts etc and your system specs i had a bright idea, what is stopping you from mgetting a 939 x2 cpu.I paid £55 for mine and can hit 3Ghz if i had good cooling. That would save you a whole bunch of money

AM2+ supports Hypertransport 3.0 which doubles the bandwidth of the existing Hypertransport found on AM2 boards. This is to prepare for the extra bandwidth needed for quad-cores. AM2+ also has extra power saving features to throttle the speed of the Hypertransport lanes and support for different power planes of the chip.
