External hard drive recognizes only once per USB port

I recently bought an AOC glacier enclosure for a Western Digital IDE hard drive (http://www.aocusa.com/pview.php?g=Sy...el=HD-EB-353-G).

The hard drive is set to "master" per the instructions and the drive is formatted - actually, it had data on it when I installed it into the enclosure and I formatted it after connecting it to my computer with NTFS.

I've copied a little bit of data to the drive so there's stuff on there now. The first time I turned it off, I used the "stop USB device" menu in my taskbar near the clock and politely stopped the hard drive before powering off the enclosure. Now, I can't get Windows to recognize it. When I turn the enclosure on, it makes the regular USB connect sound. A moment later, it makes the USB disconnect sound.

I tried plugging it into another port and Windows went through the "recognizing new hardware" stuff, found the hard drive, assigned it a drive letter, and let me do stuff. I've since turned off my machine and the enclosure and now it won't recognize again on the new USB port nor the old one.

So, it seems that I'm only able to plug this in once per port...I only have 7 USB ports and 2 of them have been used. I'd like to use the drive more 5 more times. Does anyone know why Windows isn't recognizing the drive anymore? Is there any way to clear out what was plugged into a USB port?

just leave the thing plugged in...when you want to turn it off ..shut down pc and then unplug your extrenal and turn pc on...and see what happens when you plug power back into it.

Lol. Time for more USB ports!

But really. I kind of had a similar problem with my keyboard recently. Would work in some usb ports, sometimes. Then it wouldn't sometimes. Would have to play musical USB ports until it worked. It wasn't recognized by windows.

I went into the device manager, found my keyboard (had the yellow ? mark by it) and uninstalled it. Then new hardware was found, windows did it's thing, and i have been good ever since...

That's the funny thing about USB (or actually really annoying).. if you plug the same device into a different port (even a mouse), the system treats it like a whole new device.

So, I checked device manager and when I turn it on and it makes the "USB plug in sound", I see it listed under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" with the rest of the USB devices as a "USB Mass Storage Device". About 5-10 seconds later, it makes the "USB disconnect" sound and then disappears.

Think I just have a bum enclosure? Should I RMA it? I also have a Maxtor external hard drive, which works perfectly.

Well, if it works with a different port, I'd say it's a driver issue. There's no reason why it should work fine with one port, and crap out with another.
