LCD Mods

Thread Starter
I need help. I have a mod project going on (see link in sig). I'm planning on making a front-panel to cover up the drive bays not used and to add some more functions/style.

I was going to cut out a logo, and back light it, but I've decided that it would be much cooler to just have a small LCD screen there instead.

I'm all out of ideas for LCD mods though. I'm looking for a 5-7'' LCD screen that would be under $120, and wouldn't be impossible to mod to work with my video card or a PCI card.

Do you guys know of any screens that are cheap and modable? Keep in mind, I've never soldered before, and I'm a noob when it comes to that stuff, so I would need a very clear set of instructions if the mod would take some level of hack-n-make type work.

Hi.

I'm in a simalar situation.

Here is an article that you may find helpful. The first Q & A pertains to Laptop monitors.

"it takes a large cash investment and a good understanding of electronics. If you are lacking in either of these departments don't bother, buy a cheap LCD with VGA connection on eBay instead."

Probably not what you wanted to hear... I want to do something similar, but it seems that project will be rather involved...?

If you do find something helpful, please let me know. I will do the same for you.

The only things I can find are LCD panels for cars, they are sub-$100 range, but all connect using S-Video/RCA, which I think greatly reduces the quality of the picture. . .

Edit:

That's a pretty cheap one that I found. It's 7'', looks like it uses s-video, but how would I power something like that inside my computer?

and it runs off 12VDC!! Man, that's sweet. I was wondering about the power too.. curious what the draw on that would be? Could you just throw an inline fuse on the power cable and wire it to a molex connector? I've got an Red LED Flame Plug for my car cig ligher I want to use as a case badge, and that's 12VDC as well.

I'm not sure actually, I'd have to check it out and see how it works with 12v of power. I found the same screen on amazon for $36 shipped. $36 is just cheap enough for me to do some playing around without much worry that I can't replace it.

some people use the lcd from the ps1 lcd, its a 5in screen, and it has 4 wires to connet it to a composite input, which you can get the adaptor for s-video. also dont forget the drive bas are only 5.25 inchs wide

Try this page: http://store.earthlcd.com/LCD-Products/LCD-Kits

I heard about this site yesterday and was thinking about getting one from them, but I'm not sure it's worth the price for what I was going to do.
