Help With 8800GTS

Thread Starter
Hey just bought a new PC about 2 weeks ago, and i was a little short on money so i opted for the cheap 500W PSU like $20 AU, and im just wondering if there is anychance that this isnt sufficient enough to run my 8800GTS 640mb on a full load, and also what would be you suggestions for a new PSU (probably around 500-600W). Reguardless of whether it is sufficient enough to run it i still would much rather a modular PSU so i dont have a mess of cables everywhere. Any ideas?

i would get a 600w psu obviously one with a 6 pin pci-e on it, the 500w should be okay, but i'd get a more powerful one just to be safe

Welcome to the forums, add your system specs from the link in user CP.
I would recc. at least a 550W PSU with 40Amps on the 12V+. This is just my personal preference, but you don't want to skimp on this, it could kill that pretty new card and everything else in your case.

My 8800 gts 320 runs ok with my 550w psu but if i overclock it, it stops working and i have 18 amps on my 12V rails so i would suggest a psu which has around 26 to 30 amps on the 12v rails especially if you are thinking of overclocking your gfx card.

Yeah when i run Oblivion for some reason it lags a bit but im pulling 50 fps and sometimes it just drops to like 20 fps. Plus i just installed 3dmark06 and as soon as it got to the CPU tests it just lagged and lagged and i wasnt getting any frames, im starting to wonder whether i shouldnt be playing taxing games like oblivion before i get a new PSU, if that is the case of course.

As far as the lag... might want to look at your drivers again and makes sure you have the most stable ones out. (Not sure of that with 8-series) As far as a new PSU. Mine was 80 dollars in a sale at Comp USA. 160 orig. 650W, 2x12v rails for SLI @ 19amp each.. Not too bad for 80. You can probably get something similar, if not, then better for around the same price. let 100-110 be a limit? That'll get you something enough to run your 8800 happily.

Well atm i am running the 154.45 beta drivers but it was doing the same with the 154.43 drivers as well which leads me to believe that it is the PSU.
