Or maybe my HSF is badly seated. I don't think it should be in the 70's at complete stock.

I'll set my vcore to what yours is and mess with that then.

Before I do this I'll set my system to complete stock and compare benchmarks with you. =D
lets follow the standard high-temps question list.
-are sure your HSF is seated correctly?
-how much thermal paste did you use?
(look here for more info on aplication of thermal paste http://www.overclock.net/intel-air-c...el-rice-4.html)
-what is your ambient temp?
-do you have good airflow inside your case?

i know asking this can make one feel like a noob, but things are easily forgotten.

Can I get it above 2.4ghz with the stock vcore?

And, would it actually run cooler if I ran it at higher speeds while leaving the vcore at what I have it at now?
The 6420 is really easy to OC on the stock vcore, have you tried pushing it higher while still using stock voltages?

Reseat that stock HSF, very common occurance with the 775 socket is that all 4 pins aren't snapped down all the way!

Don't remind me how much trouble I had with mne. I had to get somebody else to come over and lend me a hand installing it; it was such a pain.

On stock cooling i got mine to 2.8ghz by just raising the FSB and everything else Auto.

My friends E6420 that I built the other day is currently running at 3.2Ghz @ 1.4v... Temps are around 38C-40C at load on stock cooling I went straight to 1.4v and I haven't tried running 3.2Ghz at a lower vCore yet since the temps are already pretty damn good...

Okay. I set it all back to stock voltage but left it at current speed (2432mhz) and it booted up. I haven't tried benchmarking or anything but I seem to be doing fine. It's been on for 10 minutes.

My idle temps are 50. I definitely must have screwed up my HSF.

you should be doing much better than that with the E6420. I know mine does not have stock cooling but its at stock voltage at 3.2ghz are core 0 and 1 are around 22 degrees at idle, should not be almost a 30 degree difference simply because of the cooler.

is the computer in a hot room and how is the airflow in the case?

Edit: just saw your sig, and yeah, i guess your airflow should be good. is the fan running at 100%, i guess you could connect it straight to the ps. make sure not to add too much paste on the cpu either.

Airflow of the case is decent, and there's an air duct over the CPU's HSF with a 140mm fan pumping fresh air onto it. Computer is in an air-conditioned room.
