Virus is taking over my computer! Help!!

Thread Starter
So lately my computer has been getting extremely slow and unresponsive, and I'm positive it's a virus.

I downloaded a malicious file the other day and although I scanned for a virus, it came out clean. I should have followed my instinct and left it alone because I opened it, nothing happened, and i quickly end-tasked it.

Unfortunately I don't think that was good enough because my computer has been bogging down, down, down. I noticed there's a few tasks in the task menu that, when I attempt to close them, say "This is a critical Windows application and cannot be closed by Task Manager". It's the kind of warning message that looks fake because it has the yellow asterisk like in the title of this thread.

I ran Norton Internet Security in safe mode, but it did not detect the virus. I'm not sure it will either because it didn't detect it the first time.

When I boot my computer like normal, it takes forever to turn on, and when it does I have no task menu/start. It's always minimized but when i pull it up there is still no task bar. Also, my comp won't detect any USB items or open any programs.

What should I do?!?!?!

Download Avast! Home Edition and do a boot time scan.

Norton blows dude..

Also run CC Cleaner and defrag and all those normal things.

EDIT:

I also recommend AVG antivirus, and for adware finders I suggest Spybot search and destroy, as well as Lavasoft Ad-aware. Between those three my system has stayed clean for as long as I've had it, no popups, nothing. Sometimes the adware searches come across a virus or two while scanning and AVG takes care of them. Good luck!

Hey a fellow xbox modder .

Yes you can burn them to disk, but I don't know if they'll run in safe mode. Install Avast! in normal Windows, and after it is done, it will ask if you want to do a scan on reboot(or something). Say yes. It will reboot and then avast will scan before almost anything of Windows loads.

take the drive out and use a USB to IDE/SATA drive cable plug it in to another computer.

Then it shows up as a drive....copy off the important files.

Then wipe it.

That's actually not a bad idea! I think I may go that way... Only thing is I'll need to get a copy of XP...

If my friend borrowed me a CD and I used the key from my old CD (I still have it) will Microsoft consider it genuine? Or do I need to get a brand new copy?
