Let's see if you can figure this out.

Thread Starter
Onion from the EVGA forums referred me here so I'll paste it from there.

I've posted this issues on other forums without resolution or explaination.

System specs.

Evga 680 A1 (p28 BIOS)
2 x 1GB Mushkin XP2-9200 (DDR 1150) 2.3V
C2D e6700 @ 10x360 1.425V (1.36 reported in BIOS and CPUZ)
PCP&C 1KW power supply.
4 x 150GB Raptors in RAID.

Okay after several showers I feel somewhat comfortable on the dark side (Intel.) But man has this experience been like sleeping with your ex. She isn't the same girl she was.

I have a fully stable overclock verified with consecutive eight hour Orthos passes, a 14 hour memtest pass, and eight hours of looping 3DMark2006. But in order to do that I have to run my memory at DDR 800 (3-3-3-8 1T timings though) However somewhere around DDR 940 for some odd reason I get freezes in Orthos after about six seconds, but only in large FFT, small FFT will loop forever. The memory will still test fine in memtest. NOTE the BIOS will report 1131 mhz if I set it to 1150. SLI Memory is disabled and I'm running unlinked.

Now if I bump the CPU voltage so it reads 1.5V, it stabilizes a BIT. Wait a minute here! I'm speeding up the RAM, what gives? Is it normal for the CPU to require more voltage when you speed up the RAM? The only way I can pull stock speed on my ram with any stability at when the CPU runs at stock. Memtest has never showed an error with this ram at any speed.

BTW: I am able to run some benches with my CPU overclock and running the ram at 1150 with the stock timings of 5-5-4-12 2T DDR800 @ (3-3-3-8 1T) is faster.

I was an AMD man for years and never saw anything like this. Either upping the speed of the RAM really taxes the CPU or I'm looking at an incompatibility with the EVGA 680i A1 and my Mushkin RAM.

These are the settings that crash when trying to run my RAM at it's advertised speeds:

FSB Mem Clock Mode = Unlinked
FSB(QDR) = 1440
Mem(DDR = 1152
No memory ratio is there for unlinked.

Voltages are:

CPU Core............................ - 1.425v
CPU FSB............................. - 1.4v
Memory.............................. - 2.30v
nForce SPP.......................... - 1.40v
nForce MCP.......................... - 1.50v
HT nForce SPP <-> MCP............... - 1.20v

Memory Timing Setting
Memopry Timing Setting.............. - Expert
tCL (CAS Latency)................... - 5
tRCD................................ - 5
tRP................................. - 4
tRAS................................ - 12
Command Per Clock (CMD)............. - 2T

tRRD................................ - Auto (5)
tRC................................. - Auto (33)
tWR................................. - Auto (6)
tWTR................................ - Auto (11)
tREF................................ - Auto (7.8uS)

System Clocks
CPU Multiplier...................... - 10x
PCIe x16_1 (Mhz).................... - 100MHz
PCIe x16_3 (Mhz).................... - 100MHz
PCIe x16_2 (Mhz).................... - 100MHz
SPP <-> MCP Ref Clock MHz........... - 200
nForce SPP --> nForce MCP........... - 5x
nForce SPP <-- nForce MCP........... - 5x

BTW: I tried dropping the multiplier, running linked and with ratios with the same results.

Did you try to increase your nForce SPP voltage a bit? Try it at 1.45V. You might want to point a fan at the northbridge though, since it could get a little hot.

That didn't help but I think you pointed me in the right direction.

This little biznatch here.

HT nForce SPP <-> MCP to 1.4V

Before Orthos would crash after 6 seconds to a minute.

15 minutes and counting. I'll keep you posted and just for the increased stability I have now...

you get ten goose points (don't knock it, I'm sparing with the goose points.)

Still going strong on Orthos after 4 hours. Now if I can just coax those guys at Mushkin to help me with some of the advanced timings in the evga BIOS, I can maximize my bandwidth.

Don't spend all your goose points in one place. Seriously though, that means thanks.

Your Mushkin RAM has the same chips as my old Geil kit did. Heres the timings I used @ 485Mhz.

"Standard" timings of 4-3-3-6. Obviously you can set whatever these your RAM recommends.

Subtimings aren't usually listed by manufactures, so you gotta do guess work. My 650i's BIOS is a bit more primative than your 680i's, but it should at least match timing options.

tRc - 15
tRFC - 32 *
tWR - 4
tWTR - 6
RAS to RAS tRRD - 4
tREF - Auto
TRD - 3

I left tREF at auto because anything but auto gave errors, so... Just left it there.

For tRFC, 32 was perfectly stable, any less, it wouldn't even boot. Black screen, RAM errors.

I suggest running those timings @ DDR2-800, and tightening them down and speeding your RAM up a bit once you have all the timings dialed in.

Good to hear mongoose Real overclocking forum like OCN is a great place for knowledge and support.
BTW, on OCN I'm grunion, rhymes with onion and the user name onion was in use so I could not use it
