is it the cpu or MOBO

Thread Starter
a friend of mine's pc quit working, when you try to turn it on not a single sound comes from the mobo, and the screen doesn't come on at all. i tested all parts and swapped out the power supply except the mobo and the cpu. i actually put his cpu into my pc and my pc started acting like his where it wouldn't post anything and no sounds at all. the lights are on on his mobo, such as the ethernet light. I'm just not convinced its the cpu only. I was going to put my cpu into his mobo and test it but actidently bent some pins and had a big scare for about 10 minutes tring to bend pins back to get my cpu to work so i don't really want to throw my cpu in his unless i really have to. so i'm not sure weather to suggest he buy a new mobo, cpu, or both. any sugestions guys or questions i can try to answer to shed some more light on the situation?

also about a month ago he had a power surge which caused his ethernet port to quit working so he had to buy a nic card to get back on line. just to keep in mind that maybe its the mobo. i also reset the cmos on the mobo with the same outcome no power to the monitor, and no beeps from the mobo saying somethings wrong.

the cpu is a amd 3200 and mobo is a g8n gigabyte mobo.

Well put his cpu in your mobo and then you will know if its dead. I would def say its the mobo though.

yea i did put his cpu in my mobo and my computer started acting like his where it wouldn't post and the motherboard wouldn't even make a beep telling me somethings wrong. so thats what got me thinking the cpu is bad, but i'm just not for sure, and i'm still not sure if his mobo works or not, but it does light up.

Sounds like the CPU is toast. Havn't seen one blow in a while, not since the AthlonXP days

Yup it sounds like the CPU, try putting your CPU in his mobo and see if it gets it to boot

I think it's the CPU then. But you really have to put your CPU in his mobo first, to tell if it's only the CPU or also the mobo. Right now you can't tell if the mobo is working.
