Opty OC

I'm planning on getting this:
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?...&view=detailed

+ this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=57&subcat=821

My question: Will I be able to easily get the opty up to 2.6Ghz/ equivalent or better power than my currenly oc'd 3800+ which is ocd to 2.6Ghz? How good is the opty in comparison to my current one on stock?

Also, on the subject of ram dividers in my bios, theres no such ratio settings such as 1:2, just ram speed (400mhz, 333mhz) etc and latency settings. If i wana put the ram on a divider (which i will probs have to to get a high oc on the opty), do i just reduce the ram speed?

Cheers,
Snipe

At stock the 3800 will be faster on single core applications or non-multitasking situations. With that cooler, chip and board you can easily get 2.6-2.8 out of that opty. And yes, to set a lower ram devider just lower the speed or your ram. It will allow for a better overclock. Good luck and nice choice for a chip and cooler.

Also assuming the 3800 is a single core not the dual core chip, correct?

Should get the opty to a 2.8 mininum

The setting with 400mhz is the 1:1 ratio since your ram is probably 400 ddr. So anything lower like 333mhz will be really close to a 5:6 ratio, 200 will be a 1:2 ratio.

The problem will be your motherboard. As many of us have found out the A8N SLIs they are quite FSB limited. Most don't get much higher than 250 FSB, with very few getting near 300. So say you are extremely lucky and get one that will go up to 300, that means you will be at 300 x 9 = 2.7ghz, but more likely will be closer to 250 x 9 = 2.25ghz. Either way, you would be better off with opty since its dual core.

I don't really agree with subby. No disrespect just personal experience with those boards. I have O.C.'d 2 of them and they both did 300FSB no problem.

They were the A8N-SLI Deluxe versions

the best i got my opty to is 2.2 ghz cause i didnt want to go past a certain heat threshold cause i am really picky on that. but im sure you can get it to 2.6 and the opty beat out my 3200+ on stock settings in every benchmark i have done

Excellent help reps for you all

As long as the opty will be faster, more powerful and better at running games than my current single core 3800+, I'll be happy

It definitely will be, and later Opty's are awesome clockers too. Combined with that heatsink you should get at least 2.8 with low, maybe stock volts.

The Ultra-120 is a great choice if you decide to cut the IHS off the chip for a few hundred extra MHz, just use the mounting method that I came up with and you're golden. (if you're interested in running without the ihs, let me know and I'll type up the best way to mount it, otherwise I don't want to spend the time)

Thanks - I probably won't be running without the ihs, I dont really want to risk taking it off etc..

But yea, if I do I'll ask you thanks for the offer!

How well does the 120 do without a 120mm fan? I got a spare 120mm lying around here but it would be quieter without

Also, how heavy is it? I hope i don't need to prop it up with anything, or stand the risk of the fat thing falling off...
I hope the mounting brackets are secure
