lol u may have nuked your cpu. Good thing it didnt crack, sending shrapnel everywhere in the case.

But I may be wrong. Reset the CMOS, install a mini speaker to the mobo (there really called buzzers) and try it with just the basics first (gfx, psu, ram cpu, mobo)

If it dosen't work it could be that the psu cant support the vid card. What wattage is it?

there was a small scratch where the screwdriver slipped no broken traces though
On socket A Chips, No. Very poor thermal over ride features. Check out this vid>

On newer CPU's you might have been OK because of thermal protection features.

In general it is NEVER ok to run any CPU without a heatsink!

NO

Running it without at least a HS for even a second is NOT ok.
Take my word for it - your chip hit the bucket.

Try the diagnosing steps suggested With your previous CPU

(mobo sounds good then).

Good luck man.

The only way you could run the CPU without a HS is if your mobo has overheating protection, even then it would be extremely iffy. And considering you saw a smoking CPU, it's dead.

It's b/c the cores are small and there's no IHS over the top to help spread the heat.

You can take the FAN off, but if the HS comes off, it's over for good.

Do an overnight reset CMOS, take the BIOS chip out and the battery too w/ the computer unplugged from the wall. Just leave it like that for a day or overnight. If you don't know how to take the BIOS chip out, what I do is a get a paper clip, straighten it out, put clear tape around it and then light the tape up with a lighter. I just repeat the process until the paperclip is nice and smoothed out with a layer of plastic over it, it keep the chip from getting scratched. It might be overkill but I haven't lost a BIOS chip yet from a scratch.

It takes about 8 seconds to fry a socket "A" CPU!

Wanna hear a story duke?

Friend on here khat17 - he was setting up a system for a friend (both of them were)

The CPU was a duron 900MHZ, he plopped it in, set the system straigh up, and let her boot.
When he got into windoze, (playing UT lol) he smelt something funky and "oh!" - wady know, he left off the HS!
yanked the power chord out pronto, and put on the necessary stuff, and tried to boot, NADA! lol

He tried a few more times, and guess what - beep!

Turns out, from that day, the guy just had to turn the system on and off a few times, before it came up

(the resillience of an AMD K7 chip I tell you)
