Wire gauge, measure of bare wire or wire + outside insulating

Hi,

Like the title said, is 18 awg the apply to the thickness off the wire with it’s plasic sheath or the outside diameter of wire + sheathing?. I bought a stretch of , 4 18awg wire all sheathed, in a cable for an extended Molex cable.

The Molex wires off my PSU sure look thicker than the wire inside this sheathed w ire cable. I had been told that the typical Molex lead was 18 awg. This is important because I have to run it about 6 ft.

Enlightenment?

Thanks

It's the measure of the bare wire. I'll go find this nifty site I've seen before on it. It's really helpful.

I can't find the actual site I had seen, but here is the wiki.

Here is an online conversion tool to get the size of the wire based on the AWG rating.

Correct, most PSUs use 18ga. 6ft is a long distance... how much power do you plan to run through it?
Once again...

Thanks forthe reply, very good question. I'll be running 4 10.6 wat 12v fans plus a dvd-do-everything-fast rom (what ever wattage that is).

I posted this aspect of what I'm doing in a separate thread. The concensus (from some calulator jockies) seemed to be that my 6' wire(s) might get warm, but not to worry.

If you know better, please advise, the wires in this sleave sure look wimpy.

Thanks

Croak
