Vdroop on ASUS commando/how to deal with it?

HI EVERYBODY!!!

So, I have an ASUS commando motherboard. Two days ago, I tried OCing this sucker and I was able to get my corsair value/select 667MHz ram to get to 400MHz FSB and my core 2 duo e6400 to get up to 3.2GHz. To me, that was quite a feat because I had only been able to get to 2.9GHz with the same processor/ram combination on a P5B dlx (which i need to send out for an RMA but thats a different story). Besides, 2.9GHz to 3.2 GHz yields a 1 FPS increase in the "return the proxycon" test of 3DMark06, (thats a 3dmark score increase of 400 points, lol)

So I was fairly happy with this OC. Until i started to mess with the ram timings and that screwed me over big time.

my settings for the 400MHz FSB overclock in the bios screens are as follows:
(note: the other settings ive changed to correlate with a guide that some other forum user posted. I forget his name at the moment).

Vcore 1.4125V
FSB/RAM ratio 1:1
FSB TERMINATION 1.55V
NBVcore 1.60V
VDDR 2.125V
DDR ref voltages AUTO MODE (I have no idea what those settings are for)
SBVcore 1.50V
SBChipsetV 1.05V

ramtimings:

5-5-5-15

When i was stable @ those settings, i decided to fool around and change the ram timings to 4-4-4-12. And when i did that the PC shut down like it normally does when an OC fails.

when i tried to recover my stable settings with the OC profiling i reboot, and the OC failed.

so i tried starting from scratch to OC. but now I cant seem to go past 325MHz FSB without POST failing. I'm guessing its a voltage stabilization problem.

I'm hearing a lot about Vdroop affecting voltage stablization of Vcore, so I was wondering if anyone knew how to check the voltages of the ram or Vcore with a voltmeter on the motherboard or knew how to get rid of this vdroop. I know how to solder and have the necessary tools but i dont want to go that far to void a warranty.

I wanted to do this mod before i decide to hock up $100 for DDR2 800MHz ram

O yeah and i think my ram is screwed because I get these HIGHLY intermittent immediate BSOD/shutdowns even when I'm @ stock settings with no BIOS changes. (it seems liek its the ram because ive had crashes before where replacing the ram solves the problem. I should do a ram test but im too lazy right now)

I get some pretty serious Vdroop as well.

1.400V set in BIOS > 1.36V Idle > 1.32V Load

I think there is a pencil mod for this mobo....I'm pretty sure it's the same as the P5B Delux, have a look around.

Your problem doesn't sound like a Vdroop issue, but a RAM issue like you've said. I'd recommend running Memtest to be sure.

Also your FSB and NB voltages seem a bit high for a 400 MHz FSB, I only needed 1.475V for the NB and 1.400V for the FSB to reach 400 MHz. Try lowering them a little, to much voltage my lead to instability.

I followed the vdroop mod over at xtreme systems and it definitely helped my OC. My vcore "droop" under loads was as much as .06-.08volts! After the mod it still droops but, only by about .01-.02volts now
I did the pencil mod btw, not the solder method

I thought the P5N32-E/Striker/Commando were all the same, apparently the commando is a different setup than the P5N32-E/Striker.

so, you a guys are saying that all that Vdroop is caused by poor soldering contacts on the capacitors of the motherboard, is this correct?

I know that graphite from an HB pencil is conductive, but im sure a soldering iron with just a smidget of solder would work better.

Mikey, If my electronics knowledge serves me, I dont think adding too much graphite on the contact will cause an overvoltage, but may cause a short to another component if it gets all over the place.

Nonetheless, thanks for the link, +rep points 4 you. I will try the pencil mod and see how it works.

No the Vdroop is "built" into ASUS boards.

The graphite goes on a resistor, and causes there to be more resistance (could be less, I forget), either way there will be more voltage going to your CPU under load.

It has nothing to do with poor contacts or capacitors, it's just the way ASUS designs their boards (as per Intel's specs).

alright i just tried to add graphite onto the soldering contacts of that components as per tthe image provided in mikey's link but there is no change.

I was using an HB pencil.

AMD dave, you said it was a resistor, then im guessing what im doing is trying to decrease the resistance of that components so that more current can be supplied to the core.

If that is the case, then shouldnt i be adding graphite to the top surface of the resistor to create a parallel circuit?

another question:

Cpu-Z reports my voltage to be 1.088V and thats constant, but ASUS probe states 1.28V but drops to 1.17V when idle.

Is CPU-z a correct voltage readout?
