Recommend me a DX10 - Page 2

As Ninja Boy stated, wait until the new ATI cards come out (HD 2600 and 2900 1GB). Prices should definately come down.

320MB 8800GTS, anything below that cannot handle DX10 so theres no point in buying anything lower unless you are not in Vista.

I agree with Murlocke here. Anything below the 8800 GTS 320MB is a complete waste of money if you're planning on running DX10 as the cards below it can barely compete with NVidia's 7 series.

Now if you want bare minimum to actually play DX10 games you will be thinking about an 8800 GTS and it comes down to one factor, what is your resolution... If you're running 1280 and below then get the 320, any higher and you might want to push for the 640.

Like was stated many times here, wait and see if the price drops.

I'm in the same boat as you Katana. I've been waiting since I built my rig back in Jan. Nothing has really jumped out at me and I want to be able to see these cards playing on dx10 games before I do anything. So I wait...

I think the 8600GTS could do pretty good at 1024x768 resolution on default settings. That's just my opinion or should I say my guess I have no facts to back that up but it seems majority of the people who play with an 8800XXX play at max settings with a high resolution.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 8500GT is a low-end card (low settings at a low resolution), 8600GT/S mid-ranged card (default settings with a GTS and maybe a little adjusting with the GT), and 8800XXX (high-end settings at high resolution.

The same logic will not hold true in DX10. I have said earlier that the FPS ratio should be the same in DX10 as it is in DX9 but the graphic technology will be far superior ultimately requiring more GPU power.

The 8600 and whatnot, in my personal opinion, are just 7 series equivalents with DX10 support, they are only useful to run Aero in Vista.

I read a review somewhere that the 8600 barely-scrapes-by or is worse than7600GT in some directx 9.0c games. Not a good price/performance ratio.
why do people keep saying stupid things like this?I have always been a mid range gamer and like to keep my stuff low cost,I have had a 7600GT and it was good for games then but suckes now,I got 4600 in 3d mark 06 with my 7600GT and i now get 5900 with my 8600GTS,So how could you even come close to saying that they are in the same boat or even range,The 8800GTS is less than twice the power of the 8600,IF i where you i would wait for a price drop and get a the 640MB 8800GTS,the DX10 games will have more textures and will need more VRAM 320 isnt that much more than 256 and some dx9 games and high res need more than 320.

According to many many people, the 320MB one is like one of the greatest cards ever, it blows the HD1900XT.

An 8800GTS is half the power of a 8600? Whered the heck you hear that from?

I guess they say stupid things like that for the same reason you just did. Just because 3D Mark '06 gives you a score on your card doesn't mean you are going to get the same real world performance.
