I think I may have killed my X1950!? Help ..

Thread Starter
So I've been overclocking my X1950XT for a couple days, and I just started overvolting it. I had figured out the best stable OC for my memory at my current voltage, which was 972mhz. I forget what my core was, it was more than 948mhz, and I had been bumping it up. Each time I bumped it up I ran ATI tool's "scan for artifacts" for 1 minute. Finally I got artifacts and the comp crashed. Normal, it did that every time I got artifacts, it just told me that my core was unstable at the current voltage and speed. I watched my temps, they NEVER got above 78, and were usually 70-72.

So Windows started up all normal, and I saw my desktop, all it's icons, perfect color, perfect resolution, on both monitors. However after 5 or 10 seconds the primary monitor shows nothing but a solid orange color and my secondary shows a solid green color. I've restarted 3 times, each time leaving the comp off for 30 seconds to 3 minutes. The CPU is OC'd to 2.5ghz on stock voltage, but that hasn't been a problem, it's been at that speed all day. I might try pulling the battery to clear to CMOS to see if it's my CPU or not.

Any suggestions?

Lee, the $1380 gaming rig.

ehh hopefully that isnt the case but overvolting can go bad. you should try another vid card. maybe safe mode and reinstall drivers.

Here are my voltages, I wrote them down.

GPU: 1.50v
MUDDC: 2.184 (actually, it was the next one up)
MVDDQ: 2.184 (next one up as well)
VDDCI: 1.50

I don't remember the mem voltage, but it was one or two steps above that. Nothing too extreme at all. Temps were fine under load.

Put the card back to stock and shut down. Re-seat the GPU and unplug the monitor cables. Plug in the monitor cables and make sure they're in GOOD (do this at both ends, monitor and computer).

Turn on the computer and see if it happens. If it does, reset the CMOS and try again. Still happening? Drivercleaner and new drivers. Still? RMA.

EDIT: Make sure the PCI-E power cable is in good.

But to answer your question - I'd clear to CMOS like you said, and set everything back to stock. Make sure the volts for your Video Card are back to normal with stock clocks. I'd wait a little more than a few minutes before powering back on then. Give it at least a good 20 minutes to cool off. If all that doesn't work... not sure what to tell you. Try a different Vid card in your PC if you have one. Make sure to isolate that (even though that's probably your problem). Other than that, not too sure. You could try deleting and reinstalling the drivers, but that probably won't make much difference.

And like bigvaL said, make sure the cables are attached properly as well and your card is seated good.

Maybe wait a bit longer for it to cool down too..

I don't think it's fried.. I doubt it work start up perfectly at first if it was dead, just seems to be too hot or something. Something similar happened to me with my ole fx5500 and it freaked the bejeezus out of me.

ATItool never loads the overclocked speeds or voltages until I tell it to. On boot it should be totally stock. I'm letting it wait a half hour then I'm gonna try again.

WOW... 1.5V on the GPU???? That seems high to me since I'm using a 6800GT...

This is what I do if that happens...I take the GFX out and leave it in a anti static bag, then take it out and put it back in..

Okay. Gave my gaming rig a half hour to unwind, pulled all plugs, etc. Left the mobo's battery in, it loaded with my OC (2.5ghz) and everything is in order.

How does a X1950XT overheat at 78c?

Oh well. I'm happy. I think I've pushed it far enough, I'm gonna leave it alone for awhile.
