I Think I'm a Moron(SATA Woes)

Thread Starter
I got my new SATA HDD today and I go to install XP Pro on it and I hit a problem that says that the NTKSL booter/kernel/whatever it's called is missing. Usually what it says when your OS install is corrupt. It doesn't even pop up with the "hit enter to boot from cd" option, it just goes right to not being able to find the kernal. So, my question is, when I put in the old IDE drive, it works fine. Is my computer ignoring the DVDROM as a boot drive while the SATA is in? That's what it kinda seems like, it reads from it, but gives no option to boot from it. Any help would be great to end this headache.

This problem is widely common when somebody has deferent HD, I’m almost sure that the problem is with Windows Boot Loader.
I'm not an expert at edit the boot loader but I advice you to disconnect your IDE HDD & attach only the new SATA, remove all partitions on the SATA, & then reinstall windows XP into one partition only.

This way you'll guarantee that Windows Boot Loader is located & configured well into you're new HDD.

After Windows XP boots probably, attach your old IDE HDD.

Hope that helps
Cheers

That's the problem, when It's just the SATA HDD installed it disk won't even boot, but if I slap in the IDE and the SATA at the same time it will. I'm worried if I use the IDE to boot and install on the SATA, that it will not work after install.

Boot windows from your IDE drive and install the driver for your sata drive then restart and boot from cd-rom to install xp on to the sata drive.

Didn't think you needed driver for SATA unless it was RAID.

(before I post any further -- no I'm not stalking you around the forums )

How would that even help? The drivers aren't initialised at the POST, and he wants to access the CD at the post.

To OP> Did you try disabling your P-ATA drive before booting to CD?

The IDE drive was removed before I tried to install.

Uggh, it's really irritating as well due to the fact that my Vista disk won't seem to work at all now. We moved recently and it got scratched up somehow, so it won't work no matter how many times I slather it with Brasso and buff it. *sigh* Should I bother getting another Vista disk or just stick with XP Pro?
