Death of 7950GT - What now?

Thread Starter
My 7950GT popped last week, with a small amount of flame, a considerable amount of nasty burning smell and no life from the card. I returned it to the store and they have given a refund (thank you ebuyer, top service). Now i have the problem of what to buy to replace it.

The facts:

1. I have a budget of £150-£200.
2. My board is capable of SLI (680i).
3. I have no idea of the best direction to take.

For this sort of budget I could get 1 decent card, or 2 lower spec and sli em. It looks to me like I could get a single 8800GTS or 2x7600GT / 2x8600GT/GTS (just). What can you wonderful people recommend? Any other suggestions?

In your collective experience, which would offer best all round gaming performance?

When budget is in mind, it is always better to go with 1 card over 2 sli'd IMO. It seems a good rule-of-thumb ("can't do much damage with that now can we... should be rule-of-wrist") is a set of SLI'd cards will give you 1.5 times the perofmrance of that card alone... threfore, I say go for the best single card you can get.

DX10 is the future of gaming. Go with the 8800GTS (640).

general views seem to be to get one decent card. looks like its going to be an 8800gts. can people now suggest any specifics - i generally use the rule that the higher numbers are better, ie clock speeds. advice welcome
