Dx9 or Dx10 card?

Thread Starter
currently i have an ATI X850XT. runs ok i guess, but i wanna upgrade; not sure though if i should get a 7900nVidia or 1950pro, either way with vista out and dx10 coming out for Xp in a while, is it worth the 'investment' or should i just buy a dx10 card along with vista?

I understand your dilemma. I would suggest going with a mid range DX10 card like an 8600GT or GTS. They are great cards with very good DX9 performance and you are future proof for DX10. You don't have to buy vista along with them you can use them in XP for a while until you decide u want to go to vista, but if u do decide to go to vista don't try to play games with anything less than 2gb of ram.

I'm having to make the exact same choice as justed here, so any answers would be helpful to me too (between x1950pro, 7900GS and 8600GT) It's a difficult choice.

Go for a dx10 card, if you can afford, then go for 8800gts or higher, they have especially good dx10 performance. I would say don't go for an 8600gt or below.

Go with an eVGA 7900GS for $150, then use eVGA's step-up program to move to an 8800GTS 320mb within 3 months (which should be lower-priced by then).

8800GTS will kill the 8600GT.

The Step-Up program is wonderful for this exact situation, where someone is stuck in between DX9 and 10. You would be moving from a very capable DX9 card (which is a great overclocker btw) to a fantastic DX10 card. All for the msrp of the GTS if I may add.
