DX10 isn't coming out for XP...

That's exactly why Step-Up is beneficial. You pay $150 for the 7900 now, and $100-150 later to move up to the 8800.

It means you get a good card now, and an excellent card later to utilize DX10.

I thought you were not able to jump series with the step-up, only within 7xxx if you buy a 7xxx card, but hopefully I am mistaken, as this will sway my choice to a 7900GS possibly!

That was a myth NiK, you can step up from 7900gt to 8800gts etc.

However, remember that it is the MSRP not the RRP, step up isn't always the best deal.

No, I'm positive you can jump series. As long as it is an eVGA card and you have all of the original packaging, etc.

Edit - here are the msrp's of the 2 cards from evga.com:
7900GS 250mb - $250
8800GTS 320mb - $299

For 50 dollars, you move up to the 8800GTS (if you were stepping up now of course). The msrp's will probably change within 3 months, but the difference should still be around $50 I'd guess.

I have an ATi Radeon X800XL with an AMD Athlon64 X2 in my other rig. It still plays Steam Games and World of Warcraft at max settings. I would wait and get an 8800GTS 320MB after the price drop.
An 8800GTS 320MB > 7900GTX SLi in almost all applications.

Yes, you can jump series with an eVGA card. Just make sure you keep all of the orginial packing. I would get an eVGA e-GeForce 7950GT with 256MB of GDDR3 ram then upgrade to an eVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS (either 640MB or 320MB).

Oh already thanks Niko! Yeah I just took a look on the EVGA website and that MSRP is pretty steep, about 40$ more compared to other sites listed on their own page...

Oh well just makes the decision a little more difficult

I would wait till the DX10 Games came out as then you will see what best to get and there should be a price drop but if you need it now get this.
