Dx9 or Dx10 card? - Page 3

post #21 of 41
Direct X 10 is a mess right now. The 1st generation DX10 card cannot run COJ very well. Its like having the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro running Oblivion. Just wait for the second gen to come.

Edit - here are the msrp's of the 2 cards from evga.com:
7900GS 250mb - $250
8800GTS 320mb - $299

For 50 dollars, you move up to the 8800GTS (if you were stepping up now of course). The msrp's will probably change within 3 months, but the difference should still be around $50 I'd guess.
The step up price is from what you actually buy it from to the MSRP, so RP-MSRP

(RP=retail price...yeh?)

Thus, you will not buy the 7900gs for MSRP price, so it will cost you alot more where it could be your best bet to sell the card used on eBay then buy the 8800gts used.

Justedbin, unforunately for both me and you, its very hard to get a straight answer on this topic. The people who want to play the games now at great FPS will reccomend a X1950XT or a 7950GT, and to a lesser budget a X1950PRO or 7900GS. The people who want to be futureproofed will choose the 8600GT/GTS (for your budget) and play today's games at similar frame rates to the X1950Pro/7900GS, but will be able to play DX10 games at however low framerate it is. Unfortunately, there is little to no data available on how the 8xxx series will run pure DX10 games (not patched), so for me it is hard to justify spending more for something that, by the look of performance charts of DX10 patched games, won't be very playable.

In the end, the choice is up to you, it depends on your view on things, but with that budget (similar to mine) I would suggest sticking with DX10, and going with eVGA if you believe you would like to "step-up" the card within 90 days. Also just a word of caution, if you do get a DX10 card, you will need to use Vista (99% sure )

Nick

Think of it this way.
7900 = $180-$200
8600 = $120-$150

Both perform roughly the same in DX9 games. You have a X850XT? Yeah you could go for a 8600GT and notice some improvement. Is it worth the $130? Yeah I'd say it is.

They are made of win and jellybeans. Look in sig for voltmod thread for overclock at 800/1901 for 70min stable.

I think also it depends when your next computer will be built.

I mean, if your in high school and your going into junior year, it'd be a great year to buy a DX9 comp as it's going out of phase for pretty cheap. Then, 2 or 3 years later when you go into college (or w/e) you can just get a DX10 comp with parts that you know will either work or not.

I personally recommend the X1950 as it blows the 8600GT out of the water in DX9 stuff. But if the 8600GT performs equally in DX10 games (pure+patched w/ good drivers) as the 7600GT does in DX9 then you might have a dilemma.

EDIT:

Comparison of the two possible cards: 8600GT vs. X1950PRO

I mean, this card is less than $140

X1950PRO

This one just looks kinda cheap, at $110

8600GT

Or you could just overclock the X1900GT to match the X1950Pro clock speed which is 30 dollars less.
