Why lower the Multiplier?

Yup, the title is pretty much my question. Why would you lower the multiplier if it just increases your RAM workload?

Some pros and cons would be nice

*my situation*
I got my cpu (look at my rig below) to 2890 mhz at a vcore of 1.2188 with temps below fifty. (ran the Orthos small FTT test for 20 min)

I want to find teh best overclock, so I am thinking about lowering the multiplier. Good idea?

I think, because lowering the multi makes it so your RAM runs faster and your system somehow works more efficiently.

So like, a C2D at 3ghz with a lower multi and higher FSB is somehow better than a C2D at 3ghz with a high multi and a moderate FSB. Then, in theory, my E6420 can acheive GREATER performance than extreme edition core 2, at it's 2.93ghz speed, because the EE just has a higher multi.

Say the max your CPU can take is 3600mhz and that takes 515fsb (my chip for example).

Instead of running 515fsb and a 7x mutiplier like on the e6300's, you could run a 6x multi and push your FSB to 600 (just an example lol). This way, you are still at your CPUs max frequency, but you've just gained 45fsb.

Yeah, but I took the advice and lowered my multiplier to 9x and raised the fsb to match the 2890 mhz OC I got with the 10x multiplier. It crashed with RAM running below the rated rate.
I just only want to know about the multiplier in this thread, whereas the other is more about the fsb, RAM, and my specific BIOS and processor... but if you think it relates too much to the other please don't hesitate to delete it..

Ok, so if I reached a stable OC of 2890 with a 10x multiplier, then running a 9x multiplier won't give me a higher OC, just a "better" one?
