FSB OC in AMD setup

Thread Starter
Hello,

Is it possible/effective to run up the FSB freq. over the CPU freq.? I have noticed that most C2D OC's have the FSB running above the CPU and knocking down the CPU multi. I have tried this but no luck.

Is it becuase the FSB is effectivly on the AMD chip and should run at the same freq. or do I just need to raise NB SB voltage.

Yes most AMD users lower the multi and increase the freq.., but you will have to make sure your ram can handle the buss speed.

thanks for your reply,

my ram is fine I have tested to higher speeds, and if worse comes to worse I can step ram freq down. so would you imagine that I am having troubles because I need to raise voltage to the chipset?

Really, there is not much of a point to OCing the HTT bus. Yes, it can contribute to memory overclock stability in certain cases and only to a point there is very little to no performance benefit.
However chipset voltage should help.

on my 3800+ am2, I got to 2.4ghz @ 1.25v, then hit a wall. I then bumped my voltage to 1.32 and could get the cpu to 2.6ghz, but with stock cooling it was running a little hot. I droped it to 250x10 @ 1.32v and temps are fine. So yes you will hit a wall where you will need more voltage to bump it up.

The FSB is an antiquated term that some BIOS still refer to. In essence, it's the CPUs bus speed or Frequency so if you still use that term they are the same.
The Crosshair won't refer to the "FSB" in any way... just the CPU Frequency.

Thanks Duke, and you are exactly right, it is refered to as CPU frequency in the crosshair.

The reason I have started this thread is to inquire about continuing higher with the CPU frequency after the CPU itself has hit its wall.
First of all, is this generally done in AMD systems (as in C2D systems) and if I need to increase voltage, which voltage setting in the crosshair do I adjust...there are a number that seem to be related to the chipset i.e. NB voltage, SB voltage, NB to SB voltage (not exact terms) and the like.

Thank you in advance for any help and advice.

Well, I have had some encouraging results. I have maintained the 2.7 at the CPU and the 900 at the Ram and managed to raise the "CPU freq." to 300 with no chipset voltage increase. I am having a hard to quantifying any possible improvement as I cannot get superpi to work in vistax64 and my previous benching was all superpi.

Anyone with a crosshair out there that can help me with chipset voltage increases?
