Which Dual core opteron?

Thread Starter
Im looking to upgrade my Oc'ed 3700+ to one of the dual core 939 opterons. Only thing is i cant find too much on which one is the better deal. I will definately overclock so i guess im wondering which one is the best when overclocked. But if they are all pretty close when overclocked i would like to know that too.

Thanks

Opty 165's are going for $103 on the egg now i think

Check it out, they are pretty sweet deals at the moment

Get a opty 165 if you think you can reach about 320 FSB on that board (just incase it can do 3GHZ)

Orn get a Opty 170 if you want to use a 10x multiplyer and a lower FSB

I vote for the 165 though

So do the 170,175,180 and 185 get you anything at all? Im guessin 170+ have the 10x multi instead of only the 9x? Also do i have to reinstall windows when i install this cpu, since im going from single core? Oh yah what are the good steppings i should look for?

Your choice will depend largely on your motherboard's capabilities.

If your board can scale its HT ("FSB") above 300MHz (say, 320+), then the 165 is the best choice.

But if it struggles to reach 300, an Opteron with a higher multiplier works better.

Assuming all other things being equal (which, in practice, they're not), all dual-core Opterons will roughly have the same maximum potential (circa 3.0GHz).

Stepping information is only really useful as a rough guide, a kind of estimate of mathematical probability as far as overclocking potential. But, to answer your question, the steppings with the best reputation are definitely the CCBBE 061Xxxxxs (meaning, a dual-core with "BB" memory controller version made sometime in the 10-17th month of 2006).

You do not need to reformat/reinstall Windows when popping in a new CPU (at least, I've never had to do so, and I've swapped lots of chips in testing).

Hope this helps! And good luck.

A 170 is only $14 more than the 165 on ZZF ($114). LCB9E 07xx have been coming from everywhere, and they're very good - 2.75+ on stock voltage, 2.8 if you know what you're doing. This goes for all dual core opties from 165-185.. higher models always have a better chance of clocking higher.

I saw a guy on XS with an LCB9E 0704 Opteron 180 clock his to 3.1GHz with 1.4v on a Big Typhoon, then to 3.4GHz with the same voltage on single stage phase.
