New PC? LAN/Ethernet drivers should be on your motherboard's CD.

Install EVERYTHING from the CD. Sometimes they hide the drivers you need in the special features area of the CD. It's stupid. What's the manufacturer and model of your motherboard??

Under:
CONTROL PANEL->PERFORMANCE & MAINTENANCE->SYSTEM->HARDWARE->DEVICE MANAGER->NETWORK ADAPTERS

Does it show your LAN ports and is there a yellow question mark (if so then its your drivers)

Hold up, if you can create a dial-up connection, then get to the internet and download your drivers there if it's not on the cd.

Check to see if you have the modem drivers.
