Oh, you reminded me something. I'm thinking getting a 2.0GB Memory Stick PRO Duo from SanDisk for $40. Is this a good deal? I'm thinking of putting a playlist of my favorite songs and maybe some pictures on it.

Keep in mind I only have a 4GB iPod Nano, so I could easily fit 40% of my library on their and still have room for games saves and stuff.

Of course not. But nor am I some kid walking around with baggy pants that have pockets large enough to hide a laptop in. And I just don't care to walk around with a brick in my pocket. (Is that a PSP in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? )

It's long been common wisdom that, for portability, smaller is better. Why do you think the Palm Pilot was the first successful PDA? Not because it was so much better than its competitors...it was just the first PDA to fit comfortably in a shirt pocket. Same goes for cell phones and iPods...they wouldn't keep shrinking them if the masses didn't want smaller devices.

The PSP's large screen makes it a great video device, but it definitely hinders its portability. I think a better design would have been to go clamshell, with the top half being 100% screen and the bottom half the controls...not unlike the GBA SP. The footprint would probably shrink down to at least DS Lite size, plus my concerns about damaging the screen would be addressed. I assume there were engineering reasons that precluded such a design, but who knows...maybe we'll see a "PSP Lite" someday that reduces the form factor.

If the next PSP was designed that like, it would be an ultimate portable. However, it's also a multimedia device so Sony should really put a decent bit of flash memory into it and add a second analog stick. I would definately buy one if they did that!

The GBA SP is the ultimate portable, followed closely by the DS Lite (which is still a little big, but at least it closes and protects the screen if you stuff it into a pocket).
I stuff mines into my pocket all the time; and the screen doesn't have one scratch.

A second thumb stick would have made it great, now theres not alot of games coming out for it tho

You can get the clear plastic screen covers for it and not worry about scratch's

How the heck do you expect me to prove that? All I can give you is my anecdotal evidence. My PSP only fits comfortably in my pocket if I'm wearing loose cargo shorts. If I try to stick it in the pocket of a pair of jeans, it feels like I'm walking around with a watermelon in my pocket.

And if there's anything else in your pocket...keys, coins, whatever...your exposed screen is at risk of being scratched as those objects rub together. The fact that you haven't scratched yours that way does not in any way mitigate the risk. Cripes, you can scratch the screen so many ways, this one seems obvious.

There, it's proof. If you don't like it, then I'm going to have to ask for that your pocket isn't in fact a Bag of Holding.

I did try those, but I didn't like the way it reduced the clarity of the screen. I also never quite got the hang of putting the darn things on, I always seemed to wind up with air bubbles and hair/lint under the screen. Yuck.

And frankly, I don't think I should have to buy "protectors" for something that should have been engineered a little more rugged for portability's sake in the first place. The very fact that people feel a screen protector is needed sort of validates my argument.

Don't get me wrong folks, like I said, I like my PSP. I just play it at home, I don't drag it around everywhere with me. I'll let my DS fill that role any day.

Well I had the same problem when I had my Gameboy Advance, but never bought a protector

Edit: my PSP is used more as a MP3 player and for emulators then UMD games.

I love mine, but not enough games really. And I don't like the screen. Mine has lots of dead pixels and I haven't even messed with the screen .

I really enjoy my PSP and use it pretty much daily, though only ever at home or a few doors away to play ad hoc Monster Hunter or Portable Ops with friends.

While I agree that a clamshell design would benefit its overall portability I think that its current design offers a good balance (for my needs at least); when I am cooking something that needs constant attention, having the PSP playing a movie while propped up on the counter is great. I have recently begun using its browser quite extensively when revising; using a hand-held to quickly check answers while literally buried in textbooks is infinitely more useful than having to find space for a laptop on my bed work area. With that said, I would like to see the ability to use Memory Stick as memory for the browser to increase performance.

Rumors of a redesign are getting more prevalent, and other rumors would suggest a redesign with longer battery life isn't too far off. Of course, they are all just rumors at the moment, but the DS Lite was a good move for Nintendo and Sony isn't shy of redesigns either.
