Actually no since I just entered the world of overclocking. I never imagined that I would get a 8800GTS. I was "forced " in a way to buy it so since I did I had to overclock my pc because it was bottlenecking the new VGA. To me a northwood would be the same as a prescott with just different name and a pentium d would have 2 physical cores like core 2 duo. PD has 2 dies, each 1 core, c2d 1 die with 2 cores. so just 1 "physical core". or im not understanding you completely.
anyway, netburst tech focusses on as many clocks/sec as possible. the CPU's reach great speeds in terms of GHz, but they dont do a lot of calculations per clock.
the C2D's might not be as fast, but do more with a single clock.
