failed Vista install...want to rid myself of it

Thread Starter
I got Vista Home Basic for free, so I attempted to install it onto a 40GB HDD that I have in addition to my 250GB HDD, which has my (good) Windows XP Pro. I ran the DVD while in XP Pro and went through the basic setup process. Then, when setup rebooted by itself, strange things began to happen. It went to a Vista-style boot screen (as in, the font is from Vista) like "select which thing to boot" and it had "old Windows installation" and "setup rollback" (or something like that) as choices. The "old" one is of course my XP Pro installation, which I can select and use...but when I try Vista, it doesn't really work. I get the Vista background and a message saying that installation is compete...but then the computer restarts (I'm assuming there is some sort of error, because I know that by default the computer will restart on an error in Vista).

Everything from my XP Pro installation is here and everything...but for some reason it seems that the Vista setup files are on my 250GB HDD! I know this because I unplugged the 40GB...the one that I selected during Vista setup! What gives?! The "boot choosing" screen is extremely annoying...and I've decided that I don't want Vista - I just want to get RID of it! Are there just some setup files on my 250GB (the C drive) to delete?

This just happened to me actually. It seems that if you leave the 2nd HDD in while you are installed VISTA on a different one, it SOMETIMES like to shove a bootloader into both of them and cause issues. I would say take out the 250GB while you install VISTA on the 40GB, than put it back in when you're done.

I had the same problem for different reasons. I continually try to enhance vista, and am continually unsatisfied with the results. if only i could stop try to make it stable...

anyhow, if you are still looking for a fix to the boot menu from vista, here is the fix...

After playing around with Vista for a few days, you may want to remove it from your system, and reclaim the hard drive space. Microsoft has made this step very simple as well.

Boot your computer in to Windows XP.
Ensure you have the Vista DVD image emulated or in the DVD drive.
Go to “Start†and “Runâ€. Type in “e:\\boot\\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force†(without quotes, and replacing e: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD).
Restart the computer, and you will notice the boot selection menu is gone.
Format the partition/drive where you had Vista installed.
Remove two files (Boot.BAK & Bootsect.BAK) on your XP drive’s root folder (C, these were backup files of your previous bootloader, now no longer useful. Caution: these are hidden system files.
Optional: Restart to ensure it still works.
Use your partition software to merge your partitions together.
And now you have returned your computer to its previous state, without Vista and without the new bootloader. If anyone has any issues, please post it in comments and I’ll try to resolve it.
here is the page i found it on...

hope it helps, it got rid of the menu for me.
