Overclocking and multis.

Thread Starter
I'm running an e6700 right now at 10x360.

Like older AMD, is there any advantage to dropping my multi and going for higher FSB, ala 9x400 or even 8x450?

Also should I expect to raise my VCore a bit as well? I know with some AMDs, running higher FSB usually meant more VCore.

Thanks in advance.

Eh this has kinda been a controversial subject for C2Ds. As of right now the community votes "No" if I'm not mistaken, as do I

Yes there is a big advantage when you drop it because, when dropping, to keep the same frequency, you increase the FSB, and therefore the overall system performance. For example, a 8x450 will perform better that a 9x400. And no, when increasing FSB, you don't have to increase the Vcore as long as the frequence remains the same, in other words as long as it's not being overclocked.

please elaborate on why you say no. I'd like to hear both sides. Sounds like an interesting issue.

Leave it to freakin computer geeks to think that's interesting. Ahh, geeks will be geeks as will I

Just from some of the threads I read I was under the impression 8x450 is the same as 9x400 ... what about you Emmanuel?

Well I know with some AMDs and NForce chipsets, certain multis would really impact your memory bandwidth in a negative way. I was thinking that may hold true with Intel and Nforce.

Basically with C2D the FSB increase has a insignificant impact on performance. Lowering the multi and running it at the same speed won't show any results in real world applications, but it may give you that 0.001s faster in Superpi

I just might have to put it to the test. I'm a data talks, bull**** walks type of guy. Benchmarks, some games, and maybe other apps.

3DMark06 would likely NOT be a good test since it is mostly testing the video, thus any possible improvements would be neglible. Some Sandra memory and CPU benchies would be useful. Yes, I'll include real world apps. Recommendations?

Well, it'll probably give you a minute difference...but nothing you'd notice. The best thing to do would be to max out BOTH. Most C2D chips will max out your mobo if you take em high enough...
